’Mononoke’ is a show that has nothing to do with Hayao Miyazaki ‘Mononoke’ is a show that has, without hyperbole, the most beautiful art style I’ve ever seen ‘Mononoke’ is a show about a medicine seller whose goal is to slay mononoke with a sword that can only be used once he discovers the shape, truth, and reasoning of the mononoke. ‘Mononoke’ is a samurai detective psychological horror high art vignette mystery ghost story show where the first episode is set in the Edo period, and the last 3 are set 300 years later.
Mononoke (2007) is my favourite anime of all time, and this movie is a 15th anniversary project that is the first in a trilogy (next one will be released this year I believe). If you enjoy the movie, I highly recommend going back to watch the original series! Or watch the series first, it's separated into mini-arcs so it's basically like 5 movies.
Mind-boggling animation that is half horror, half adorable Nana-esque protagonists in which the girls are in love with each other but don’t admit it. Insanely intense visuals - check this out if you’re looking for vibrant colors !
(I haven't finished the show as of writing this)
This show is literally Ghibli House, I know I'm generalizing but they're extremely similar
Episodical show about a guy who deals with people's sicknesses and paranormal phenomena
It has a beautiful art style, aesthetic and soundtrack and each episode is modeled after myths and folk tales
The show covers other topics like philosophy as well
It's not super long either like under 75 episodes total and the anime covers the entire story
It's not really graphic or anything but the story is definitely marketed towards adults, I wouldn't know if kids would enjoy it
8.5/10
