This object recently came into my life. I found it on my dad’s shelf and had a listen through. It was a ā€œconversationā€ between my dad and my (then) baby sister, learning to speak. I’d never been transported to another time like that before, it was like I was in the room, a feeling no photo or video had ever given me. In that moment I realised the importance of audio documentation. I’ve made a decision to record interactions on this device for the foreseeable - until it dies I suppose. -Tyler

i have been carrying around one of these bad boys with me everywhere for a while now. sometimes you just wanna get a recording of a really good street performance or capture a bit of cafe ambience. it’s easy to use, and you can develop your own little audio diary ! it’s only backfired on me once: i was at a party and a guy i was talking to noticed i was recording and he called me a pervert (??!?!!)

For yourself and/or loved ones! Forever ago my grandpa recorded himself introducing and telling stories in between a marimba set in our native language (mayan dialect). Though I was never taught the language, my dad always goes back to it and though i don’t understand it, it’s just warm to hear him talking and laughing again. I’ve recently started doing something similar and it’s felt so therapeutic and fun to do! It’s like a diary and great at capturing me at this point in time. The first one i made was for a girl (put it on a cd and everything for her bc idk physical media is so cool and permanent but also easily broken/trashed in case she ever wants to get rid of it) but since then theyve all just been for me. Still need to edit together the last two recordings but I highly recommend recording yourself for you!

Before you judge me just know I identify as an archivist and I would never share any of these raw files, they’re purely for my ears only. According to my sources, (the voices in my head) one day I’m going to make a film or write a book or record an album. The voices haven’t told me which one. But I figure these recordings will serve as inspiration for all of the above and I’m convinced I’ll need them one day to write realistic dialogue or sample in some coded way that only I will understand. It’s never anything too salacious either, there’s just a certain magic to how candidly people speak when they don’t know they’re being recorded. Whether it’s a young couple breaking up on the subway platform, a life changing DJ set I’ll never hear again, or another painfully awkward phone call from my Dad after he’s had too many beers. I feel compelled to archive it all. My lawyer suggested I not speak on it any further but for what it’s worth New York is a one-party consent state which means most of these are totally legal and permissible in a court of law.

I’ve been hanging out a lot with my best friend’s grandma. She’s really great. She lets me come to her church and play the organ there. We have coffee, and she recently showed me all her textile art pieces. We listened to the Beethoven cello sonataĀ  (A major) she is requesting for her funeral. She’s strong, creative, quick witted and stands up for me when other members of the congregation don’t want me to play the organ. -May

Wolf Hall and Wolf Hall 2: Bring Up The Bodies are two of the best books ever. Hilary Mantel delivers a stunning portrait of Thomas Cromwell, the understated but supremely talented ā€˜blacksmith’s boy’ turned Secretary to Henry VIII. All sorts of things happen in these two books as he (Thomas Cromwell) navigates his way around a large cast of cunning characters and through a number of sticky situations. There is a third and final book (Wolf Hall 3: The Mirror and the Light) that I imagine is also one of the best books of all time but I haven’t read it yet but I did get it for Christmas so can look forward to reading it soon! -Charlie

Luke from BC,NR bought me a framed and signed photo of Jack Bauer for my 25th birthday in 2023. I keep it next to another framed (as yet unsigned) photo of me, my girlfriend Ginny and the aforementioned Luke. Jack Bauer to me represents an attitude toward tasks and chores that I aspire to. He always gets the job done, even if that means breaking a few rules here and there. Ever since I’ve had him I’ve had an exemplary approach to laundry. -Lewis
