Start narrating yourself cooking, explaining the dish you are making the choices of ingredients to the imaginary camera/judges. Or when you are eating out, critique the dish you were served (to yourself) as if you were a judge on a show.
Not only is it fun, but it tricks you into being a lot more intentional with what you are doing. You are thinking about exact flavor pairings and textures and it helps you understand why your dish did or didn't work or why you did or didn't like what you bought.
My dad teases me about how when I was a little kid, my favorite thing to do when I was on the landline phone with somebody—be it a relative or one of my best friends—was to breathlessly describe the things that were in my bedroom so that they could have a mental picture of everything I loved and chose to surround myself with, and where I sat at that moment in time.
