1) Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me - not the Twin Peaks film people wanted at the time but I can't imagine a version of the whole story without this film re-cementing Laura Palmer as the beating heart of the whole thing. Mesmerising. Why is David Bowie here. 10/10 2) Mysterious Skin - I was told this movie was about UFOs. This did not exactly prepare me for what the film actually is at ALL. Its beautiful and heartbraking and I think about it a lot 3) The People's Joker - watched it with my friend and had an INCREDIBLE time. More trans people should violate copyright law in the name of Really Good Art. I have so much to say about it 4) The Witches of Eastwick - if they werent such cowards these women would be gay, and the movie would rocket to at least an 8/10. How do u have a cast like that and leave me BORED !!!!!!

@PRINCESS I think it was literally the Letterboxd description lmao. I just checked it again and I swear it was even less illuminating than that at the time

Not the "best" movies to go on like an AFI list, but the ones that shaped me: Blue Velvet - my first (only?) exposure to that level of mordant humor and Freudian menace American Movie - I watch this at least once a year and feel its rawness and sadness a little more profoundly each time Gummo - my people, finally represented on screen Zodiac - captures something no one talks about, which is how fucking *dark* the Bay Area is. A procedural, but less about cops and more about a kind of media terrorism and the propagation of social-psychological contagion Twin Peaks: FWWM - the first 30 minutes rewired me permanently, never been the same since Raising Arizona - I grew up in the sticks and this was the first "art film" I ever saw. Watched it enough times to memorize every line

The vibes.. the music… it’s just yes. honorable mentions that I don’t think I’ve seen mentioned yet include: -30 days of night (a vampire movie that is very like a zombie movie.. in Alaska..) -lair of the white worm (so kooky and hugh grant is reaaaallly looking good) -midnight mass (mini series) -The Coppola Nosferatu with Winona and Keanu and gratuitous Sapphic makeouts -the vourdalak (the vampire is a puppet and it works) -shadow of the vampire and Herzog nosferatu double feature -kuroneko (for a different take on what a vampire can be) -Nadja (briefly featuring David lynch) -and Habit (especially if you live in New York)
