1. Princess Mononoke— I obviously knew about this movie whenever a Ghibli conversation would come up, but i recently got around to watching cause it was re-released in theaters. WOW, low-key violent, irreverent, and deep as hell. Definitely the most mature Miyazaki film. It's also the kind of film that other properties stole from, I'm thinking The Last Airbender and Zelda. Would recommend to anyone who’s on the fence about anime (if you consider Ghibli anime). 2. Okja— Bong Joon Ho, Hilarious, Animal rights but not in a preachy way. Super cool. You might be Vegan after. 3. Opus— My last two spots could go either way. I thought Opus was a really cool critique of celebrity culture. Ayo slays, and it has the dude that play’s the hotel manager from the first season of White Lotus, he also slays. Reminded me a lot of midsummer but like actually funny not uncomfortable funny. 4. Mickey 17— Cool, funny, Toni Collette is a gem. Original. Class commentary. I want a spinoff about their food.

i could be considered the ghibli version of a disney adult but without hoarding themed stuff. i go to gkids every year. ok- this depends on how you define underrated.. the boy and the heron? so underrated. if you haven’t, watch it because it’s all the things a ghibli movie is: top tier animation, sobering themes, cozy/low stimulation scenes, character decisions that catch you off guard. they’re so good at telling a story. whisper of the heart is the cutest little low stim comfort film about falling in love. it’s a warm hug like totoro (without the dying mother :/) the cat returns is not low stim but it’s fun and cheeky in a way the others aren’t. it gives me princess bride vibes i can’t explain why.

the environmental themes, the stunning visuals, the grandiose soundtrack, there is so much you can get out of this movie on many levels. the most impactful story for me was Ashitaka’s. i think everyone should watch it, as it has a lot of themes that are relevant today. and it’s just cool! the action is so creative and the soundtrack and animation is incredible. (spoilers below ⬇) ashitaka having to leave his family and community despite the love they have for one another due to the disease of hate, that will one day kill him. traveling alone with no one else to understand his experience or relate to. having to overcome the disease of hate, even needing to give mercy to the ppl that caused him to be ripped from his family and cause his death sentence... so sad :( but also i relate strongly with his character arc. i always connected to it from a perspective of being an lgbtq person. but, i think it could apply to a lot of perspectives. in conclusion, he so me. 🌀
