Also underground/exploitation horror, its artistic merits/lack thereof, and thematic/cultural connections to pornography

I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. I was a huge horror fan when I was younger. I don’t have as much of a stomach for the kind of movies I used to enjoy but I have been getting back into it as the seasons begin to change. I saw some discussions of the scariest and most disturbing movies, started reading about underground and exploitation horror, and it got the gears in my brain moving because I couldn’t help but Notice things… You‘ll be able to hear me speak with nunjournal about this in depth and at length in the next episode of our podcast Gilded! We had a lot of fun researching and flexing our analytical muscles for this one so we may do more like it in the future

PERFECT BLUE

My all-time favorite film is Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue. No other movie goes deep into avatars, alter egos, and the unraveling of one’s identity after stepping into the dark side of entertainment quite like this one. It’s beautiful and incredibly dark. It feels especially relevant in today’s digital age.

I’ve loved thrifting and vintage since I was young, and while I’m not a perfect sustainable fashionista, I try! I also really enjoy the cultural commentary and policy coverage — they’re so helpful for a girl with an environmental reporter beat and a passion for eco-fashion.
