rules are simple: go through the entire alphabet finding a word that starts with the first letter of each letter in the alphabet. you may not use license plates or car brand/model names. sometimes i rule out bumper stickers but that’s up to you. examples: Applebees for A then a road sign for a town called Bristol forB and so on and so forth. if you have others in the car and want to make it competitive call out what letter you found and what word it was from after it’s out of the field of vision. this is harder if you’re driving. First one to get to Z wins! there are Xpress trucks that drive all over the country and save me for X, usually have to find aQuik Trip or a quilt store for Q. When I was a kid my dad made up the “failed ideologies” game where if we spotted any symbol of a failed ideology, i.e. a confederate flag or a motorcycle helmet modeled after a WWI german soldier helmet he would give us a dollar for pointing it out. this may only work best in the south idk what kind of failed ideologies are in the flat lands. If you pass by a cracker barrel get one of those road trip bingo games pictured below, i always have one in the passenger seat of my husbands car and use them on our drive to the beach and have gotten them for my nieces and nephews. I have one for highways, one for interstates, and even an OBX specific one. The final classic game that got me thru road trips as a child when it was too dark to see my gameboy color is looking at other people in cars and making up stories about their lives. what’s their name? where are they heading to/from? what music are they listening to? where will they stop for dinner? being bored is very good for neural pathways and creativity so try to make the most of it!

No-cost games

me and my friends play “what’s in my bag?” at restaurants as a silly way to pass time. must have bag, preferably with multiple compartments We also play a game where we all try to rapid fire say the same word. So we all stand around in a circle, someone counts down, and then everyone says a word and then you look hard into each others’ eyes and say things like “I think we’re all on the same page” and “we’ve got it this time“ and then keep saying words until you all say the same one word. Sounds incredibly stupid but is amazingly fun. I recommend doing this outdoors with 3+ people. does this make sense??

10/10 road trip game 1 person (let’s call them the thinker; you need at least 3 ppl total to play) thinks of a word. don’t tell anyone! they say the first letter of the word. the rest of the players (the guessers) start thinking of words that begin with that letter. when someone thinks of one, they give a hint that will hopefully make at least one other guesser think of the same word. let’s say the first letter is ‘d’. Guesser 1 would say something like “I’m thinking of a country….” if another guesser can think of a country that starts with ‘d’, they say “CONTACT!” and count down 3-2-1. if both guessers say the same word at the same time, the thinker owes them another letter. the twist is that the thinker can also guess at words, and if they correctly say the word before the guessers can, they don’t owe a letter. so the thinker could say “it’s not Denmark” before the two guessers say it, and they don’t owe a letter. really fun bc it makes you rely on in-jokes and stuff to try to avoid giving generic clues the thinker can get.

Sticker on the forehead game

It probably has a better name but this is what everyone I know has called it. It’s a classic with simple rules that everyone can follow. You put a famous or well known persons name on the head of the person next to you and you go round asking 1 yes or no question at a time until someone guessed their person, then theyve won. You can then continue until everyone has guessed theirs correctly. This is a great one when people are feeling less creative/energised so don’t want to do anything like charades. a good end of the night game when wine or time have slowed you all down.
