Is this a good movie? No, not really. The plot is surprisingly confusing for its genre, the woman in charge of Austenland is running what’s basically a psychosexual torture compound in corsets, and overall it just doesn’t come together. Luckily, Jennifer Coolidge is on set and just speaking when the spirit moves her. Clearly unscripted but with unbelievable timing, character work, etc., sometimes even when she’s off screen (!), she’s easily 80% of the delight to be drawn from the movie even though she’s probably only in 40% of it. The other character actors also put in delightful performances - especially James Callis as the resident dandy - and there are some good bits outside of Jennifer Coolidge. But she’s the real star of the show and worth the price of admission on her own.
the perffffect mainstream comedy. a stacked cast (rachel mcadams and jesse plemons give the standout performances imo) and actually smart and witty writing!
First of all, look at this cast. That should be enough! This movie is about these temp workers who are just kinda passing time at a random office job. They become good friends but when someone in the office starts stealing things, the office leadership puts them all under a microscope and it tears them apart. Loved this and it’s beautifully shot. Parker Posey (coolest girl alive) always has the best outfits and now I really want the brown suede mules she wears throughout this movie lol
Janelle Monae’s severely underrated second album. Sonically a journey through Motown, electronic, funk, alt. In the lineage of Outkast, Stevie Wonder, Prince and more. The sequencing is also insane. Listen to it front to back - it’s a journey!!!!
