this stands the test of time and remains my favorite emo album. adolescent angst paired with thoughtful riffs. in proper hardcore/emo form, i kill giants disbanded after releasing this, another EP and a handful of singles. (i'd tell you the hits, but you should listen to this one straight through!!!)

if you like the emo pop punk side of things, but not in a guy-punching-a-hole-in-drywall-for-no-reason sort of way, i strongly urge you to check this one out! been keeping up w these guys for a few years now and they have truly found the balance between “this riff fucks” and “this melody is so fun”. plus, they’ve really grown as songwriters in comparison to their earlier work. emo fall is upon us, friends, but this time we’re slipping into angst laced with fun.

Two things. All of my peers make music, but rarely do any of their songs make it into my listening catalog. Also, I hate emo. The Branching Out EP may have changed that? This EP takes the things about emo that turned me off and turns me on to them. Lyrics devoid of individualism, *riffs*, and fun vibes. This was made by a BAND who’s having fun and I’m having fun with them. It makes you want to go to a show again. The words are so stupid yet comforting, the musicianship indulgent but exciting, the affect emo with a 1/4 cup of hope. It’s self taught musicians cosplaying the Berklee School of Music School of Music but without the chord sheets or pretension. Track titles such as Vampire Vibes, Confessions of an Aries, and This Wasn’t On My Planner display a finger on the pulse ironic sincerity that actually works for once. It’s about heartbreak, being nervous, having a crush, and wanting to die. Perfect for my little brothers friend/ex pupil of mine from my time as counselor at a rock n’ roll music camp located in the basement of the church in my suburb who attended their EP release show in New York. I think this appeals to 16 year old life noobs, 20 something year old haters like myself, and even the chicks. I could listen to them whine all day.

when i worked at the Apple Store / Genius Bar in college, we were trained on "assuming positive intent" from customers and peers. at the time, when i was a shithead 20-year-old, i thought this phrase was such bullshit. of course i can tell when someone has malicious intent, why not respond in kind! but now that i'm a bit older, i've realized the real wisdom behind the idea "assume positive intent" is that, when faced with interpersonal conflict, it's better to take the path of least resistance and keep your cool. for example, if i'm getting kind of annoyed with someone at work and i want to write a snarky email, i find it best to walk away from the keyboard and write my response when i'm feeling less activated. the result is that i can feel good about how i handle my feelings, i reflect better on other people, and i'm being an actual grown up. ;~)
