My personally favorite film trilogy. Directed by one of my favorite directors Masaki Kobayashi and stars one of my favorite actors Tatsuya Nakadai. Amazing war story that spans 3 films and features incredible acting.

Samurai Week getting even better. as much as I enjoyed Seven Samurai, I enjoyed this one considerably more. A masterless samurai arrives at the palace of a daimyo requesting use of the courtyard to commit harakiri, the rite of ritual disembowelment. suspecting that he is just looking for sympathy or employment, the samurai engage him in a deep exploration of the values, intentions, and code of himself and of the samurai as a way of life. Genuinely some of the most beautiful and masterful storytelling I’ve ever seen put to film. I was captivated every single second. The writing is excellent and the story is so compelling. The structure is perfect. a beautiful exploration of the honor culture of feudal Japan and what it leads to. Such a deeply human story. Five stars “Who can fathom the depths of another man’s heart?” Samurai Week Film Three: Throne of Blood (1957)

I saw my first film directed by Kore-eda yesterday and it was a masterpiece! I absolutely loved this film. This is also the first film I have seen that has Ryuichi Sakamoto as the composer! I really love the emotion and character shown in this film. The actors and actresses did a great job acting. It definitely struck a chord with me and I felt like I could definitely relate to what was shown in the film. I heavily recommend this film and will be excited to check out more films made by this director.

everyone’s heard of Seven Samurai but last night was my first time watching it. Great start to Samurai Week, wherein I watch a new classic Samurai movie every night this week. After being repeatedly attacked by bandits, a village must hire samurai to protect them before the next harvest, with nothing to pay them but food. a group of samurai assembles to defend the village and teach the villagers to defend themselves. Not much to say about this movie other than it’s excellent. clearly so influential on action films and really any movie where a team has to assemble in order to achieve a goal. The pace is very slow, but so much of that time is dedicated to characterization which is so important and well-done that it works well. The cinematography isn’t super flashy but the visual commitment to realism and immersion is so stunning. really feels like you’re in a 16th century Japanese village. The characterization makes for lots of hard hitting emotional moments that payoff well in the final act. So good. So beautiful “This baby is me. This baby’s story is my story.” Samurai Week Film Two: Harakiri (1962)

I’m not going to go into detail of the story of the film because I think it is better to watch when you don’t know the plot of the movie. This film always makes me teary-eyed when I watch it. It is an amazing melodrama made by the legendary Akira Kurosawa. It is one of the most genuinely moving films ever made in my opinion. Great acting as well!
