this was right before the worldwide lockdown in 2020. it was surreal for me, especially since i'd only started becoming obsessed with their music in 2019 and never thought i'd get to see them in my city, because indie artists rarely made a stop here. but i got to meet them! got to chat for a bit before the gig, they signed my CD. super chill, nice dudes, and freakin tall, especially andrew / deb demure (frontman) – my asian ass looked like a hobbit next to them. anyway, it was a really small venue, so the gig was pretty intimate. i got to be in the front row, i was literally standing just a few inches away from alex / mona d (keys). they were amazing live. one of the best darkwave bands ever. hope to see them again someday

janelle monae in 2013(?) and she was electric (pun intended) remi wolf (supported by dora jar) was a great show, very fun, smiled the whole time caroline polachek, was the last gig the day before the first lockdowns in 2020 and then i caught covid (so did caroline so my headcancon was that i caught it from her) and saw Sophie in the flesh in the crowd and the best as of recent was tune-yards, one of the most vibrant, high energy shows with one of the most excited and in-the-moment crowds of any gig i've been too - waited 10 years to see them and they did not disappoint

caught them during the deceiver tour back in 2019. I remember thinking they were good, but nothing crazy. Their current tour has shown so much improvement it’s insane. i always love seeing the same band perform a number of times over the years because you get to watch them evolve in real time. i don’t know how to describe the difference other than imagine if there was a “sick’” knob on the audio equipment that they had turned up medium back in the day & now had fully cranked up. Played incredibly tight & integrated a really involved visual element (a lot of experimental video stuff). TBH the video was cool but kind of detracted from the experience of watching them perform. I felt like the story they were trying to tell was drenched in this above it all every-direction critique of American empire via this post-ironic rendition of conspiracy-culture. don’t get me wrong, it was cool and funny at points. But sometimes you can have something that’s funny and cool & still have it subtract from the overall intended effect. Like I get it you’re very smart and very funny and you’re really showing off right now, but you’re distracting me! You’re overloading me! Being even more honest, I should probably take my own advice on this issue LOL. I wouldn’t even necessarily recommend that they change anything about the show. I guess it’s better to be doing a lot and err on the side of maximalism while saying something unique and cool than to play it safe! Sorry if this is rambling, I’m just trying to collect my thoughts. But yeah they played great nontheless. Had a great time, they’re a really good band. wholeheartedly recommend. Favorite songs were: Like before you were born, horsehead, Blankenship (guess which diiv album is my favorite), brown paper bag (riff ripped straight from MBV and I loved it), raining on your pillow, doused(!) I didn’t take any pictures because I was living in the moment :^)

oh my goodness it was so great. i was like right at the front and it felt like rachel kept looking at me which was so surreal (i know she probably wasn’t but that’s okay) they played my fav song (crazy for you) and i was with my best friend, maya. 10/10 experience would most definitely do it again
