US-lean but lots of international stuff. you mention BBC so iām assuming youāre a brit but if youāre american or okay with a US-lean in your media - hereās leftist and independent or worker-owned news. they all do political reporting some just have a general lean in content. all have social media accounts/email newsletters and iām guessing most have rss if youre into that

independent journalists are great, usually via substack or bluesky - a few i follow include: Talia Jane, Dr. Lucky Tran, Ken Klippenstein, Marisa Kabas, Spencer Ackerman, Kat Tenbarge, Kim Kelly, Law Dork. just be sure to read more than one source (though that is standard advice for reading any news lol).
i also admittedly (as a leftist!) mostly read/listen to things that i think are perceived as left-friendly - Democracy Now, Al Jazeera, and Hellgate for news; outlets like In These Times, The Flytrap, ProPublica, Intercept, Verge, Rolling Stones and Teen Vogue etc. for analyses and exclusives
mainstream outlets like the AP can be O.K., i read them usually for developing/live situations as they tend to be kept really up to date more than smaller outlets, but i also take MSM with a grain of salt because they recently all had terrible language and bias against Palestinians the last two years (article) and trans people too
& always avoid the new york times as much as possible! archive.ph is your friend

I fuck with the n+1 online site. You can find some really thoughtful pieces on there. Like with everything though, itās still good to be selective. I had believed democracy now! to be funded mostly by listener and reader contributions, but this post made me double check that and I saw theyāre also funded by the ford foundation and such so take their stuff with a grain of salt. I do find it to be much more dedicated to accuracy than some of the main news places and itās one of the few sources I personally use for news these days.

You have to take some time and really curate Instagram but I have an account that I switch to just to read stuff a lot of individual journalists or people able to aggregate and translate on the ground coverage
Democracy now is also good and so is Al Jazeera English

i had it for a little over a year until i was like wow this is actually terrible! i genuinely think it has negatively impacted society by ruining peopleās attention spans, having a horrific algorithm, and most of all by the most mind-numbing or outright harmful trends -
fake words that people now use IRL (āunaliveā), trad wife tiktok, shein hauls, body-focused fitness vids that encourage fatphobia and unhealthy habits, shallow political/feminist theory and queer discourse, āalpha maleā podcaster tiktok, encouraging overconsumption in general, trends ruining local spots or niche thingsā¦ the list goes on
