Volunteering with ev loves nyc

Ok here’s the deal New Yorkers: 🌱 Mutual Aid org started in 2020 to cook meals for people during the pandemic, initially meant to be a small scale project for a few weeks. 🌱 Now, they’ve made 485,000+ meals over 4 years and feed people across all 5 boroughs. They have a big focus on feeding migrants in the EV, but they also send food out to many satellite orgs feeding people elsewhere. 🌱 This is not your militant volunteer work with an interview and an application and lots of rules and regulations. This is sign up and show up. (Wear a hat or you’ll have to wear an ugly hairnet.) 🌱 The main big volunteer push is every Sunday at the 6th St Community Center. They pack the whole place full of volunteers doing prep work for the cooks and then serving the meals into single serve containers. (Only cooks and head chef in the kitchen!!) 🌱 The vibes are amazing, everyone is chatting, the more social you are the better, music is playing, and the food is really really really tasty. The volunteer spots fill up about three weeks out…that’s how awesome it is. Russian Turkish Baths / East Village

I made both REN FAIRE and SPERMWORLD at the same time for the past three-ish years. I feel extremely lucky that I had the time and resources to do it, but the experience of shooting both at the same time was sometimes nightmarish. I’d be on an airplane more than I’d be in my apartment in NY. I developed a ritual, every time I’d return from a shoot, to go straight to the Russian Turkish Baths in the EV. I fucking adore the place. I have a pass for both days (I imagine many readers know well by now that there was a feud long ago between the two owners, David and Boris, and the fee changes depending on the day you show up and who’s running the show). I love Dimitry, who I believe is Boris’ son, he’s a cool ass guy who also is friendly with Ari Nagel from SPERMWORLD. Every time I’ve hit the baths with Ari, Dimitry will give us both discounts. We all just hang out, stream it up, have a beer… some Pierogi’s… come on, what could be better than that? Only thing to fellow readers — Sunday morning’s are a whole different beast… I’ll leave it at that…

putting library books on hold

go to your local library‘s website or download the app. then search for a book you really want to read. then put it on hold. it feels like online shopping but it’s free. in a few days or weeks you'll get a cute text message or email that your book is ready to pick up and you’ll get to say hello to your local librarians and procure a new (to you) book which also feels like free shopping. the most functional part of our government ily public libraries

read what you want to read

i usually find myself in reading ruts when i’m taking classes and being assigned books or when i’m trying to keep up with new releases and the “smart” books that are usually dense and long. i can usually get myself out of this rut by picking out a book that looks fun to me, like a book set on a beach or something I loved in middle school. I’m reading From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler right now and it’s just FUN!!! I also am very much not someone who feels like they have to finish a book. Life is too short. I think that helps!
