one of my favorite quick trips i've ever taken - such a cute downtown (a lot of fun shopping / dining / bars), the architecture is IN. SANE. driving down union ave looking at houses was so fun. there's also a ton in the area that is a fun sub-trip - lake george (way trashier than i thought it would be but in a fun way, the lake itself is so beautiful), i randomly was transfixed by the albany downtown area bc the government buildings feel like evil villain headquarters from the 60s / 70s, ballston spa is cool and has interesting history. AND this whole area is right up against the adirondacks so the hiking is genuinely really good!!

Truly a blessed and strange land. I grew up in the Beacon, NY area and it is always lovely to make day trips back home during the weekends. There are tons of lesser-known caves and gorges that dot the Hudson River watershed that are particularly fun to explore. Some of my favorite towns (besides Beacon) are Rhinebeck, Kingston, and Cold Spring.

Not too far from the city, absolute paradise for (east coast) hiking and museums, quirky people, great restaurants and farmers’ markets. You’d need a car to get around, but it’s quite easy to hit the major museums (Mass MOCA, Clark Institute, The Mount (Edith Wharton’s house), smaller museums at Williams, etc). I took my mom for a few days a couple summers ago and we had an absolute blast!

I guess you could say I’m a pretty avid backpacker; I enjoy the autonomy of carrying your bed, kitchen and house on your back, while navigating the unpredictability of nature. For this reason I make routine sojourns to Harriman State Park. The park is both approximate to the city, and also very remote feeling once you are inside of it. No car? No problem. Just take NJ Transit from Penn Station up to the Tuxedo, NY stop. There are multiples trailheads just near the station. About 40 miles of the Appalachian Trail pass through the park, which boasts the trail-famous Lemon Squeezer obstacle. It also is a great place for climbing, with the Claudius Smith’s Den being the best known locale for rock-heads. Harriman is a labyrinthine network of trails of varying difficulties. It’s probably the only place where you can get mauled by a black bear while looking at the Empire State Building. Actually I have had multiple bear encounters there that were totally were drama free. Great for leaf peeping as well!
