Been watching a lot of stuff lately that touches on the intersection of geo-politics and the cyberization of the body (see Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, X-Files, The Shrouds, etc.) So often people are really down on how complex and amorphous the plots can be but isn’t that the whole point? What better reflects our reality than a messy shadow world brimming with malicious government and tech sector actors seeking to weaponize our bodies and minds? These stories aim for a certain realism and achieve it in their refusal to provide clean answers. So often, there is no truth for us anymore. Everything is a false flag, everything is a psy-op, who does the smoking man really work for? We’re the victims and we can only grasp at half-truths and accept that we’ll never know. Yet in accepting that, we reach a deeper truth of another kind.

My friend Johnny sent me this article a few months ago and it’s been living rent free in my head. Reading it is like experiencing aphasia. It’s the written version of that image with no discernible objects. It made me feel like I fell asleep and woke up in a techno-thriller movie. BBC BA AND BOOTS ISSUED WITH ULTIMATUM BY CYBER GANG CLOP. What? It’s not the BBC’s fault. British readers probably understood immediately what this meant. But the feeling of disorientation I had in the moment was so powerful that it was exciting. It’s a “Spy Kids ass story” in Johnny’s words.

My #official take is that AI art generally on the whole fucking sucks. 90% of it is uninteresting slop content by brain dead techbros who have no knowledge of art or why we value it. HOWEVER!!! There is one use case where I think using AI in your art can actually elevate the work, and that’s if the art itself is in some way trying to say something about AI. Luckily, there’s actually a lot of things to say about AI – referencing it in your work pretty firmly places it in the current cultural landscape in super powerful way. Some examples (note that these all have pretty nihilistic / downright dystopian outlooks on modern society, maybe that’s also imporyant): - Vegyn’s album under the Headache pseudonym - some of the scenes in Conner O’Malley’s 103 fever short

Quiche is underrated and most places make it wrong. The eggs should be soft, rich and barely congealed not rigid and gelatinous. It’s was wrongly maligned as rich people food in the 80’s and is now relegated to mediocre bakery case versions when really it’s a versatile, honest farm meal. Quiche is cheap and easy to make and you can experiment endlessly with meat/vegetable/cheese/herb combinations. Bring a quiche to your next gathering and I promise your friends will love it.
