I know I’ve ranted about AI before but! Just saw another writer who was doing peer reviews as she was writing chapters with another person; until she found out the other person was using AI for their NOVEL! Blows my mind. She removed this person from her document and sent her a kind but straightforward message about how she won’t be working with her going forward due to the AI usage. I feel like using it for novel writing is one of the most insane uses because #1 this person told me that the AI generated parts of the work weren’t even as good as the other person’s normal writing was. #2 let’s say no one noticed and you published with the AI work, so you would be okay if the book did well but it wasn’t even truly your writing that people would be praising?? Not to mention of course the morality and environmental impact. Also, I was shopping around today for a custom leather stamp to start stamping the leather journal covers I make. Thought I found someone to make it until they said to send the logo file over and they’ll send back AI created renderings of a mockup to approve. Now I am starting the search all over🙃

AI should be used as a tool.... like a calculator... not to replace human thought and creation. hate that that individual used it for their novel 🥴

@GOBIMANCHU Honestly even then I’m very turned off by AI. Like there are already math calculator websites that exist for example without the more extreme environmental impact of AI (and from what I’ve seen with people trying to use AI to cheat in math classes it’s not the most accurate anyway, so I guess that’s what they get lol). I’ve seen some people say they use it for brainstorming or outlining, but I don’t think AI giving a person a response counts as “brainstorming”. And if someone were truly only using it to organize their thoughts why not just use a document application or a more customizable program? Outlining is an acquired/practiced skill, and also very achievable even when having to make multiple edits with programs for writing. I remember learning how to outline with pen and paper lol. I just don’t think there’s really anything it can do that can’t already be done, albeit sometimes with a different program or application. It’s just another thing that’s making people so used to getting things or having things done for them in seconds with the touch of a finger and missing out on working their brain.

@SAYLORi totally agree with you!!! its just that ive heard some people talk about how they use it for things like therapy or to have a listening ear when they dont have someone irl to listn& cant afford a therapist. before i heard that i was kind of 1000% anti AI, like disgusted with it (and i am still totally against using it for anything creation related like writing, brainstorming, art etc). but this made me a little understanding and made me think perhaps there are practical uses for it that dont compromise like humanity. agree that the environmental impact sucks but tbh then we have to look at a lot of the structures we rely on daily (ex. cars, fast food waste) that equally are shitty for the environment. theres a balance to be found i feel. similar to the internet & social media (which many older people might still not understand) , i feel chatgpt /ai can be used as a tool for good&bad. it should never replace humans though. idk if i articulated myself well but i hope this makes sense lol

I hope people who use AI to create also realize that it can be really helpful with their daily journaling. Now instead of needing to spend 25 minutes writing out my thoughts, painstakingly unearthing my emotions, and going through the trouble of getting to an interior breakthrough, I just need to feed a few data points and adjectives to the machine and it writes a great entry for me. That way I can get right back to my show!

I completely get where you’re coming from. It’s one thing to use AI for brainstorming or outlining if you’re stuck, but actually inserting AI-generated writing into a novel — especially when you’re collaborating with someone — feels like a real breach of trust. Writing is so personal, and readers connect to the voice of the author, not a machine’s imitation. It’s sad to think someone would be okay accepting praise for work that isn’t fully theirs. Also, the environmental cost of widespread AI use is real and rarely talked about enough. And I feel you on the leather stamp situation — it’s so frustrating when you’re seeking true craftsmanship and keep bumping into shortcuts. Hope you find the perfect artisan who actually respects the art of making! Would you like a few more variations depending on the tone you want (more casual, more supportive, a bit sharper)?

@STEELYFAN1998 it’s so sad. I have always been an avid user of the em dash. Seeing it become increasingly associated with AI slop is so depressing. it’s a great punctuation mark— one of the best! its so easy breezy; doesn’t have the clunky pretentious character of the semicolon. bit it’s more absolute than a comma or a single dash.

@STEELYFAN1998 I’m also a huge fan of the em dashes, semi-colons, etc. so I hate that writing with good, correct punctuation gets flagged for that now because of AI🙃

And aside from the creator side with writing and art, I’ve already noticed this crazy hive mind type mentality going on with it as well, where people are even using it to choose outfits, fashion, how they should do things, etc. and at a certain point AI is going to be the downfall of individuality. It’s like the trend that drives me crazy online where people are like “what are WE wearing right now?” “what’s are WE listening to right now?” People already can’t think for themselves in so many ways, and I totally just see this making it worse.

I feel like a super common take is like "AI lets people who wouldn't be creative to finally make their ideas work" and like... the point of art/creating is the act not the product. If your creations aren't landing, you practice and learn skills to get there - that is the real act of creation (imo)

Thinking about The purpose of AI

Apologies if this is strongly worded, but I'm pretty passionate about this. In addition to the functions public-facing AI tools have, we have to consider what the goal of AI is for corporations. This is an old cliché, but it's a useful one: follow the money. When we see some of the biggest tech companies in the world going all-in on this stuff, alarm bells should be going off. We're seeing a complete buy in by Google, Microsoft, Adobe, and even Meta suddenly pivoted to AI and seems to be quietly abandoning their beloved Metaverse. For decades, the goal of all these companies has always been infinite growth, taking a bigger share of the market, and making a bigger profit. When these are the main motivators, the workforce that carries out the labor supporting an industry is what inevitably suffers. People are told to do more with less, and cuts are made where C-suite executives see fit at the detriment of everyone down the hierarchy. Where AI is unique to other tangible products is that it is an efficiency beast in so many different ways. I have personally seen it affect my job as part of a larger cost-cutting measure. Microsoft's latest IT solutions are designed to automate as much as possible in favor of having actual people carry out typically client-facing tasks. Copy writers/editors inevitably won't be hired if people could instead type a prompt into ChatGPT to spit out a product description. Already, there are so many publications and Substacks that use AI image generators to create attention-grabbing header and link images - before this, an artist could have been paid to create something that might afford them food for the week. All this is to say that we will see a widening discrepancy between the ultra-wealthy and the working class, and the socio-economic structure we're in actively encourages consolidation of power. There are other moral implications with it that I could go on about, but they're kind of subjective. In relation to art, dedicating oneself to a craft often lends itself to fostering a community for support in one's journey, and if we collectively lean on AI more instead of other people, we risk isolating ourselves further in an environment that is already designed to do that. In my opinion, we shouldn't try to co-exist with something that is made to make our physical and emotional work obsolete.

Raise your expectations

A.I. used to make art cheaper and to avoid paying artists is abhorrent. Used to write speeches and summarize books reduces the practice and makes the accomplishment meaningless. It cheapens the process and provides no value. The way it’s being advertised is nothing short of disgusting. Google aired an ad where a father uses A.I. to help his daughter write a letter to her favorite athlete. Why are you shortcutting time spent with your daughter, teaching her how to put emotion into words, helping her work through something challenging? It’s soulless dreck. I’m tired of hearing about it, talking about it and thinking about all the ways it can ruin society. Since corporations and industry insist on shoving it down our throat, I think it’s (as always) our responsibility to demand better. The linked essay made me reconsider the use of it as a tool to expand, as you put it, as long as it’s not used to enable laziness and shortcuts.

I’m usually not as single minded about an issue but…

AI is garbage for so many reasons and none of us should be using it. that includes making art as well as seemingly mundane corporate tasks. it’s atrocious for the planet, it’s horrific for the uncredited workers who labor to power it, it bulldozes all notions of “privacy” and further fast-tracks the commodification of humanity, and it‘s fueling the dumpster fire that is an entire generation of brains raised in the cesspool of the internet.

So we all think it’s sketchy that Tik Tok is already back right? And that they posted a statement kissing Trump’s ass and making him out to be the one saving Tik Tok when he isn’t even sworn in yet? And now Trump wants the US government to have a 50% ownership, aka turning Tik Tok into state owned media just like I thought was happening. And I’m sure most people won’t be able to stay away from Tik Tok and Meta which is so disappointing. I want nothing to do with Tik Tok now because I know the app as we knew it is already gone at this point.

Get a digital camera!

There’s something about the quality of digital camera photos that make a picture of anything you take look more pleasing (to me anyway). The nostalgia, the saturation, I love them. I have a couple cameras that still work from when I was a kid, but I also bought one on eBay that was similar to one that used to be a favorite of mine. I just throw it in my purse and take it everywhere, and it’s so much more fun than trying to get the “perfect shot,” especially now that I’ve deleted Meta and gone with Pixelfed it seems that people love posting anything from the little things they see or their drinks. It’s making photo sharing fun again! Although, if you do download Pixelfed (which isn’t the point of this post but) I highly recommend using it in your browser on your phone for now, they’ve already made things run smoother from when I first downloaded but they’re definitely still working on the app.

loving the social media detoxed life

I’ve already read 48 books in 2025 while being on my flip phone, social media detox life. Yes, some of them were just trashy romance, but still. It’s been so nice to get back into reading for enjoyment again. It’s nice to be out and about and not have that constant urge to reach for a phone and check notifications. I don’t even have most social media apps downloaded on this anymore, I love this app though, and the urge to click on an app and doom-scroll is nonexistent. This brick of technology has really turned into my iPod and Kindle, and the occasional pop back on here.
