I keep a standing calendar date with my long-distance friend. At first I made the typical excuses β "My schedule changes all the time", "I'm really busy", "I'll try to make it", "maybe when terms up"....thank god for this friend b/c she did not let me slack. Rarely do we cancel and it's actually fantastic. We have our own little rules for the gathering (no course prep, no admin, no emails) only writing/research/making.

I know that digital calendars are deeply cursed, so YMMV with this one, but I highly recommend a standing time with your good ones. It says, "I am committed to this relationship and plan to see more of you!" in an absolutely non-ominous way. It says, "Regrets only." I love looking forward to my standing park walk, my first friday coffee hang, and sister dinner. I love planning for a future full of friends.

maybe itβs a quick coffee chat or a 2hr dinner or just an arts and crafts sesh but i want to know about my friends lives! even with the busyness of life i want to make sure i set time aside to make sure my friends know i appreciate them. iβve had way too many friendships just slowly fizzle out because we text every few weeks saying we should catch up and never do.

One of my oldest friends came back to visit family after she moved to The Big City ten years ago. We spent nine whole hours talking because we only get to see each other properly once every couple of years or so. We went to all the best places to eat and talk. Had super deep and personal convos in cafes regardless of who might be listening and ate loads of good food. It was incredible and I am now charged with love until next time

I teach in higher education and am always fascinated with insight into how younger generations are functioning, thinking, processing, etc. Less so because I'm a millenial but more so because it's interesting! Often we see insight into Gen Z and Gen Alpha that incredibly skewed towards negativity and dread β as with all generations, these notions don't define a generation. Kyla Scanlon wrote a great piece Gen Z and the End of Predictable Progress, about how tech and economic shifts are shaping generational identity and opportunity. Give it a read!
