I also desire to be offline, but as a UX designer it’s kind of my job to observe UI trends and functionality with a somewhat regular frequency. So I use this app, Opal, to block out apps that I select for a duration of my choosing. It’s actually really helpful despite it kind of being expensive. I find that it’s starting to break my muscle memory for opening different social media apps and for sure increasing my audiobook consumption. It’s isn’t even an ad, it’s a genuine rec because I’m a weak ass zillenial who can’t seem to find the willpower to delete their social media. RECLAIM YOUR TIME IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!

This app blocks chosen apps for you for certain periods of time. I have IG, Grindr, and Tik Tok blocked during my working hours so that I don’t impulsively check them. 1000% worth it and now I see my tech addiction.

Thanks to my ADHD, I have absolutely 0 self-control about my screen time. Opal helps with that. It blocks them pretty well. To be honest, I still also use the Apple controls AND OneSec as well. In conjunction, I am almost present most of the time.

If you’re chronically online and managing to get things done, good for you. If you’re chronically online and constantly existing between the digital and physical realms without the ability to disengage and focus on one without the other, then I highly recommend Opal. It basically has three modes of focus, the first one makes it so that you can lock apps with break times, and the other doesn’t allow you to take a break at all and locks them for set hours. The second the apps are locked I have a sense of presence that I didn’t realize I so desperately needed. Pretty sure there’s other apps that do the same and you could get a physical lockbox, but with my job needing MFA I kinda need my phone. I also just want to build a healthier relationship with it and this is a start. My screen time when I started this job has shot up an embarrassing amount and I want my brain space back.

You don’t need to suffer to prove that you’re a good person. You don’t have to stay with the job that makes you question yourself and you don’t have to keep dating that person you’re not quite clicking with. If something feels off then it probably is. I’m not advocating for immediately abandoning your responsibilities and throwing caution to the wind; but in our hearts we know when something is working and when it isn’t. That thing called intuition is your soul, and you can trust it.
