I was a millennial hater for a long time but then I realized that for all their flaws they were the only thing keeping us from sliding into fascism. I cannot stop listening to Eminem, icona pop, childish gambino, and LCD soundsystem and daydreaming about being at a Williamsburg house party in 2012.
Using generations as a cultural container is a product of marketing and media. They categorize us based on trends to better sell to us and shape our consumption habits, so we get boxed into these deterministic labels of Boomer, Gen X, Millennial, Gen Z. While there is value in sharing in the experiences of your peers, generations flatten our experience and create arbitrary divisions between age cohorts—as though someone born in 1994 and 1998 are that different. So we criticize Boomers for wrecking the planet, while Boomers blame Millennials for wanting to cancel everybody. And guess what? I don’t care if you’re Gen Z or a Boomer, so long as you’re in the Working Class. We can serve avocado toast and viral mango ice cream at the pot luck, so long as we can talk about how to fight these fucking fascist billionaires. Then again, maybe this whole rant is the most Millennial thing I could’ve done 💁♀️
okay, so I was born in 1998 but all my childhood memories stem from the early 2000's. am i a millennial fraud? iCarly, the Scholastic Book Fair, Blockbuster...you get the picture. i love imagining a simpler time before I was bombarded with every world problem at a moments notice. the past feels more comfortable and safe...that's why i'm embracing every bit of nostalgia i encounter. shoutout to @poolsuitefm for making me feel like a kid again
because sure yes part of it may be millennials’ solipsistic tendency for nostalgia but also if you can pinpoint a moment in your life where it felt like the momentum was shifting toward good and you wanted to believe that basic human decency and thought could prevail wouldn’t you have at least an impulse to reach out for that feeling? but nah really, terrible man, generational speaker
