I don't wanna say these are awful as a movie girlie i realize it takes A LOT to make any kind of movie and a lot of people are proud of these. Are these mainly characters white and straight and what i'd be mostly opposed to watching? yes. Are most of the comments old people blessing you with the love of God? Yes. But where else are you gonna watch the romance of a 18th century english prince and a 2017 new york girl in millennial chic fall in love? or an evil step mom stealing a diva's time to go to her wedding just to pay for college. I love these with all my heart.

I have many, but this is my comfort film of choice atm. It sort of sits apart from others of its teen genre at the time I think - funnier, less cheesy. All the side characters are great and the love interest is both an actually good person and not the whole point of the film.

Tangerine (2015) Critics will say the standout feature of this film is that it was shot on an iPhone when it’s *really* how closely the hysterics of the mother-in-law when she finds out Razkik is gay mirror my own mother’s reaction when I came out. Eyes Wide Shut (1999) Take a shot every time a youtube film analysis video makes mention of the Christmas lights. Spencer (2021) The image of those pearls keep me up at night Carol (2015) Throwing the gays a bone here though I’ve only seen it once–what’s the alternative?? happiest season?? k stew is already on this list… Stepmom (1998) The Ain’t No Mountain High Enough dance scene full stop. The Terminal (2004) On a re-watch it’s sooo random that Zoe Saldana and Stanley Tucci are in this The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) We all know at this point that the turkish delight is nasty, but did we know the book this film was based on is allegorically Christian? NASTIER Little Women (2019) This is an obvious choice and I will say I prefer Winona’s Jo to Saorise’s–but the amount of times I’ve the Laurie’ proposal scene speaks for itself Misery (1990) “EAT IT!!!! EAT IT UNTIL YOU CHOKE YOU SICK TWISTED FUCK!!!!!!”

Oooooh, I love this question— for context, when I was in university this is what I did my gender and film thesis on, and it’s a really interesting thing. The answers could be, briefly: Marvel, Katherine Heigl, industries skewing toward white male audiences, and raunch comedy. At the time (and now, if we’re very honest) there was a misconception that women audiences and Black audiences would go to see films with white male protagonists, while white men wouldn’t pay to see women and Black men and Black women in films— movies like Barbie, and Black Panther, and Wonder Woman really disprove this, but studios aren’t particularly brave, and can be particularly biased. So Spider Man is a safer choice than 27 Dresses, but it costs much more to make Spider Man; so a studio that used to put out 5 mid-budget romantic comedies will consolidate that budget and make one Fast&Furious, or Avengers— these are also easier to franchise, because it’s hard to make a series of a movie that ends in happily ever after (Bridget Jones being the exception that proves the rule). Additionally, around the early 2000’s the tone of romantic comedies shifted pretty radically— we shift from Sleepless in Seattle to No Strings Attached— the movies are raunchier, they tend to play on one trope (type A woman embarrassed by but ultimately in love with a slacker man). Katherine Heigl was in a few of these, and while she didn’t write these roles and wasn’t responsible for poor audience reception, we associate her with the “death of romcoms” for that reason. The romcom used to be a mid-budget vehicle for female actors to gain stardom/recognition (Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, etc.) but Katherine Heigl got very typecast and the fear of getting stuck as one kind of actor made those roles less appealing. So the movie theater romcom died, and we had these almost TV movies with Justin Timberlake and starlets transitioning from TV to film. There were a few notable indie romcoms from that period (Garden State, 500 Days of Summer) but these notably revolve around a male protagonist and the female characters are more stagnant. Even now, the few romantic comedies that come out are stylistically much different— they’re wealthier (Anyone But You) and more photoshopped feeling. Compare a Norah Ephron apartment with the settings of a romantic comedy from 2020 on, and you’ll see a stark visual difference.

I love being woke. I love caring about people. Sympathizing with different races, cultures and identities from my own. I love learning, I love reading and watching the news even if it's hard because it's outside our walls. I love art and music that talk about how we treat people for existing and what's not okay. I love not engaging with people who get uncomfy about people's well being, unlike them I see myself as a human around other humans. I love having a moral compass. I love living in Chicago, I love my city for defending a city that is mostly made up of immigrants like my parents. I love being political about everything because everything is political. <3.
