the ever-so lustrous author John Green came into my work back in November. we chatted a bit before he went back to his group of friends. before he left, i went out back to get something for him to sign. the best and most evident thing i could find was an empty egg carton. i presented the carton as a dada piece i was working on as a joke and asked he if he could sign it. not only he inspected, opened, sign it, he also wrote down a recommendation for a dada book called Young Adult Novel (something similar to Kurt Vonnegut’s Time Quake) on the side. in retrosepct, i feel silly and foolish for subjecting him to such a thing, but im sure he appreciated it and had a laugh about it. (P.S. i tried to find Young Adult Novel but searching only brought up the genre. i’m beginning to think he made it up. did John Green prank me as vengeance for my silly carton act?)

John Swartzwelder is the funniest writer in the world. I don’t know that I could write about him and do him justice, but he was a longtime Simpsons writer and then started self-publishing books that are so incredibly joke dense it will blow your mind. Here’s a quote from The Time Machine Did It, one of his many books following a strange detective named Frank Burly: “When I first became a detective I had tried solving crimes the way mystery writers do: coming up with the solution to the crime first, then working back to the point where you don't know what the hell is going on. But for some reason every time I tried that I ended up locked in a closet.”

I found this cool old paperback copy and decided to begin a Vonnegut deep dive beyond Slaughterhouse Five and (my favorite so far) Breakfast of Champions which I’d already read. The cover fell off in my bag so I taped it back on with some medical tape my friend had in her bag from Halloween 👍

if you’re a silly goon that likes watching cartoons all the time but needs a screen break, but still in need of a laugh. you should pick up a book and read John Swartzwelder - he wrote 59 episodes of The Simpsons and is a 100% surreal and absurd…

Such a wonderful album by a wonderful indie Scottish band. The lead singer just excudes so much mania and whimsy and the instrumentals across the album are on point. Definitely recommend if you’re into Yo La Tengo or Stereolab.
