Rollo May’s The Courage to Create is a profound exploration of the creative process, emphasizing that true creativity demands the courage to confront uncertainty, challenge societal norms, and embrace vulnerability. May argues that creativity is not merely an artistic endeavor but a fundamental aspect of human existence, requiring individuals to face their fears and doubts to bring something new into being.  This book is highly recommended for anyone seeking to understand the deeper psychological and existential dimensions of creativity. May’s insights offer valuable guidance for artists, thinkers, and anyone striving to live authentically and creatively.

Today I was thinking: why am I so much better at supporting others than I am to myself?? We really need to support ourselves! "Show how you think, show you can see an idea through, and keep doing it until you can no longer be ignored." Some really good advice if you are an "aspiring" creative to which Jess Wheeler says bollocks! (*vigorous nodding*)  "The reason I dislike the term ‘aspiring creative’ is because there’s no such thing. Either you are or you aren’t. Creative people make stuff. That’s what makes us creative. We take a nothing and turn it into something. That’s our special skill. You don’t need permission to be creative. You don’t need a job, or a client, or a brief, or a degree, you just NEED TO CREATE." 💰💰💰

12-week guided process for reconnecting with your inner child as your driving force for creating art (a lot of the exercises are writing-oriented, but it’s meant to re-invigorate any artistic practice) fundamentally the artist’s way has two core principles: (1) write a little bit every day - the book says 3 pages first thing in the morning and (2) give yourself some novel experiences as artistic input to be able to generate artistic output its hard to stay super consistent / complete all 12 weeks in 12 weeks time, but i think it is a really helpful starting place for getting back to a headspace where you’re writing / creating again because it gives you a lot of structure, room to ”fail”, find peace and joy in the process, and just have fun with it in a way we’re not really conditioned to past a certain age :)
