not trying to look like an angel, just sharing a story. last night after work, i saw an old homeless man. i’ve seen him before, so i decided to give him some money. i walked up to him, even though it was like, 10pm. i figured that since i was in a well-lit area it was safe. still, i got nervous seeing he was clearly high or mentally unstable as i got closer. long story short, being a pretty unathletic and short guy, it was a bit harrowing but i felt good afterward. fast forward to tonight, i saw him at mcdonald’s eating food. as i walked out he said “yo, thank you for the money.” he was clearly sober and enjoying a meal. i never understood why people don’t give homeless people money because they’ll buy drugs. i get that being addicted in that way is terrible and you shouldn’t directly fund that addiction, but a drug addict will do anything to get drugs. the least you can do is spare a couple bucks for the off chance they decide to use it for food.

I’ve always lived by the principle that what they do with it is their responsibility and their business, but if I don’t give money based on my own judgements and bias, those consequences are mine to own. So, I give what I have and the rest is up to them to make good choices.

@MIDWESTZEN same. in big cities or unfamiliar places though, if a homeless person comes off as aggressive, i don’t give money. it’s happened a few times before, and it’s been freaky lmao. but those are the only times i won’t give. most of them are really kind and i hope they use the money to sustain themselves one way or another.

@MIDWESTZEN for sure! I’ve had people be rude to me, or sometimes I might be put off by the people who come up to me with a big elaborate story. But when someone is just like, “Do you have $5?”, I’m like sure, dude. No problem.

At my local shop , there is this one shopkeeper who works alot during the weekdays . We compliment and smile at eachother every so often whilst he scans my chocolate and energy drinks. I once went into the shop with a 50 euro note. i only bought food worth maybe 8euros , so i had alot of change. walking home that day i lost the money , it must have fell out of my pockets whilst i took my phone or keys out . I only realised when i got home and was running around my local area following my route trying to see if i could find the money . I went to the shop , queued up again and asked him if anyone handed in any money, he said no and offered to help me search , he pulled this massive unit out from under the cashier to see if the money had fallen below . It wasnt there :( . He walked me home to see if we could find it on the street. Anyways we didnt find it , i was so embarrassed but he now has this recurring bit where he gives me my change in a plastic baggy and makes me zip it into my trouser or coat pocket . I do not even know this mans name and i highly doubt he knows mine . Spread kindness with those in your locality , there is nothing better than catching up with your deli woman or favourite shopkeeper . I love knowing that those who know fairly much nothing about you can care for you , and that you care for them . Peace and love to all

i’m thinking of all those videos on tiktok where someone asks a restaurant owner for food “but i have no money” and then BAM “actually i do have money and here is $1000” in suchhhh a good person. i just saw a girl in manhattan with a “free help” poster sign and my first thought was “oh god where is the camera” and lo and behold there was a full camera crew hiding behind her. do good things for people ! buy that drink on your tab and don’t tell anyone about it. just be nice in silence !

I love to be surprised by a stranger offering kindness out of the blue. Just now I was jogging to the train, as I do because I always leave things last minute - so I was on time to make it. But a guy in a car just stopped by me and asked if I was going to miss my train and offered a quick lift to the station I declined because I was still on time (nothing against him) but I love how that random guy just decided to stop for a moment to offer kindness, such a nice little interaction to enter the weekend with :) there’s still lots of love in the world, despite the richest trying to force barriers between strangers Also reminds me of the times working in the supermarket where I saw strangers offer to buy things for others if the other person was just short, people they might never see again but decided to give money to.
