Which meant it was the first time I got to listen to music that only I could hear (a monumental experience for a young teen in a conservative christian family). This also coincided with the emergence of CD burning. As a result, I had so many new artists and genres of music that I could dive into and immerse myself within - it was a beautiful time.
A few of the heavy hitters that come to mind are: dashboard confessional, guster, the rocket summer, death cab for cutie, weezer, and phantom planet.

The first band I ever loved and an entry point into rock music for me in middle school! I heard this album and declared “rock music is my life now” and 18 years later I’m still rockin. I plan to get a tattoo of the sheep on the album cover (its name is Franklin).

1 of 2 albums I can think of at the top of my mind that I listened to in its entirety. This takes me back to that summer in 2013 when I was listening to this album non-stop along w some indie songs I discovered thru 8tracks (I don’t know if anyone else will know this site, it was a gem). Also it was the time of my life I was just getting to know freedom from being able to travel solo and/or w friends or just discovering life. Akin to a coming-of-age movie. 😅 I don’t know if I make sense.

I don’t believe in ranking things- restaurants, albums, books, movies, athletes anything, top x lists whatever. I think it’s a waste of time honestly. Even with a completely objective criterion what’s the point. Would rather listen to and read people just talk about their favorite things and why they are special and meaningful to them- everyone has their own, interesting reasons. And this is a great place to do that!
