Adding on to @JILLY's botanical drawings post, I love these weird little animals that are all over medieval european manuscripts. Like what are they even doing ... snail jousting???
Ant "An emmet; a pismire. A small insect that lives in great numbers together in hillocks."
Caterpillar "A worm which, when it gets wings, is sustained by leaves and fruits."
Goose "A large waterfowl proverbially noted, I know not why, for foolishness."
Lion "The fiercest and most magnanimous of fourfooted beasts."
Mouse "The smallest of all beasts; a little animal haunting houses and corn fields, destroyed by cats."
Muskcat "The animal from which musk is got."
Swine "A hog; a pig. A creature remarkable for stupidity and nastiness."
Toad "An animal resembling a frog; but the frog leaps, the toad crawls: the toad is accounted venomous, I believe truly."
Itās just a game I play. āHave you tried the monkey bread?? Itās sooooo soft on the inside and crispy on the outsideā. Not to brag but I win often :-)
