Book store in Dayton, Ohio, founded as Bonnett's Back-Issue Magazines in 1939 by Hal Murray Bonnett, pulp novel author, a/k/a Noel Candler for "Satan in High Heels" which was made into a film in 1962 starring Meg Myles and Grayson Hall (later of Dark Shadows fame). The store is a pack-rat paradise; it's got it all, books, comics, vintage bondage mags, hardcore porn.... The other day I just had to get me a copy of the August 1975 issue of Penthouse -very important in light of recent revelations from the unredacted JFK files release- and I knew if anyplace had it Bonnett's would, and yes it was buried under a pile of books and boxes, but I retrieved it! Mission accomplished!

Ok, this is a more obscure rec but bear with me. I recently started spending weekend days strolling into a new used book store in the Lower East Side called Sweet Pickle Books. The store has become a comforting place to make a quick cheap purchase for me, and also my go-to store for presents. Every time I go in there I find myself picking up books with the coolest names or covers and just buying them hoping I’ll like them. I’m currently reading J.G. Ballard’s Super-Cannes which I probably would have never even known about had I not stumbled upon it and thought the cover looked cool. I suggest this method for branching out from your usual genres or authors.

High Valley Books is Bill Hall’s vast collection of rare and out of print books and magazines spanning fashion, art, architecture, interiors, photography, and fiction. It is run out of his Greenpoint basement (and now upstairs annex). My girlfriend Hannah is a writer and former bookseller who put me on to his place when she found a great copy of The Last Whole Earth Catalogue for me a couple years ago, and we’ve had the pleasure of experiencing Bill’s hospitality and deep knowledge on a few occasions since then. They have an online store if you’re not in NY and their “New Releases” email is one of the few recurring retail emails I would recommend subscribing to.

As a book nerd, I’m always looking for places to get my fix. High Valley Books in Greenpoint is amazing to behold. It’s open by appointment only and is located in the owner’s home. It specializes in vintage and out-of-print art and design books and magazines. Make sure to go downstairs so you can feel like a hobbit in your perfect, overflowing book lair! Their Instagram features pics of visitors, and is a good chance to see what cool-kids-about-town have been there recently.

Cincinnati's best kept secret, and best band (with a shout-out to Fruit LoOops, a very close runner up) -but Lashes packs so much power into such a small package (drum and base/vocals duo). Link has some tracks, though seeing them live, for the rare times they play out, is a must.

...passed away this week... R.I.P. He was a fixture of the Cincinnati underground music scene for decades. More famous for the record, Wild Angels, produced by his friend Lou Reed, and infamous for its S&M chic album cover (see link).... I guess I'll never know if he was putting me on when he told me the name of the band he was in w/ Lou Reed, pre-Velvet Underground.... In any case, I couldn't repeat it.
