donkey skin is a 70s french fairy tale musical, i feel like i cannot sell it any more than this haha. most films by jacques demy have this beautiful dreamlike quality to them and donkey skin is no exception - fun & beautiful, i 100% recommend!
This is one of my childhood films, it’s known in France and I don’t know if it’s been exported a lot but I love it ! It’s by Jacques Demy, THE French musical film director, and tells the story of donkey skin (based on a Grimm story I believe). The costumes ! The Colors ! The songs ! Catherine Deneuve ! Random people with blue skin ! It’s all good It all really creates a very whimsical fairy tale atmosphere that’s PERFECT Anyway watch it with subtitles, I’m guessing dubbed musicals are really bad Here is the trailer
It’s gotta be my favorite Jacques Demy. It’s fantastical and stunning in a way I feel a lot of films wish they were. It’s super bizarre and campy and it feels just like a dream. I would also recommend Belle du Jour and The Blood of a Poet
his films are so expressive and fantastical and above all beautiful in the photos:
the young girls of rochefort (1967)
the umbrellas of cherbourg (1964)
bay of angels (1963)
donkey skin (1970)
black queer history is FULL of forgotten legends who have shaped mainstream culture and continue to have a lasting impact on fashion, language, art & performance.
Paris Is Burning immortalises and preserves the legacy and the stories of the people featured in this film along with the spaces, community and families they created for themselves in a society that consistently marginalised and discriminated against them. this is an essential watch!!!
