i’m pretty sure this went semi-viral in the times of hyperpop, saturation, and “indie” tiktok of 2020. i think it (and kero kero bonito) was forgotten too quickly by the masses— this song is a perfect little song to fold laundry to whilst wishing to be a kid again. i think this is what would play in my scenes if i was in a ghibli film. in a way, it reminds me of something david byrne would write

this year was filled with a lot of making it up as i went along and reminding myself that i do, in fact, have plenty of time. i was figuring out where, who, or what felt right and what to do and how to do it etc, etc, and this song was just a calming anthem to return to. i also have fond memories of listening to it (maybe a little too much) during the summer, and i really miss those sweaty firefly filled nights. this was one of the first summers i’ve ever missed; i usually despise the heat. so, i feel like that stands for something.

all of mansour’s works are gorgeous and so beautifully representative of the palestinian condition (pre and post-intifada) but there’s something about 1985’s ”hope” that’s always stuck with me, much like 1993’s “the nazarene” (also attached). i cannot recommend looking further into mansour’s works enough. follow him on instagram @/sliman.mansour 🕊️
