garlic mustard (highly invasive), Alliaria petiolata, a triangular stemmed garlic smelling plant with green tubular silique fruits. Teaching my friends to identify this plant today, how to harvest and when, then how to process it into pesto. I learned how to identify this plant in an internship back in 2019 and now i’m teaching my friends how to get rid of this invasive as hell plant in our own backyards. garlicky, horseradishy, and a little bitter it’s delicious. warning though, you cannot compost or throw away this plant. you must always dispose of it in a garbage bag to transport it and burn. this plant spreads like crazy and must be treated as a disease to wildlife. even though it is yummy, it outcompetes all other plants it grows near. educate yourself on foraging practices and get out there!!

Recently I have started exploring my local woods and parks for herbs and leaves to use for teas and cooking. Today I found Three Cornered Leek and some wild garlic growing right next to it ! I love running around with my little plant identifier app and becoming more and more able to identify all the edible ( and terribly not edible) plants growing around me each day. I pop on my little foraging playlist that makes me feel like a wizard and I skip home with my baggie full of leaves:) This is the wild garlic I found today

see a toad, a leopard frog, a crawfish, a small mouth bass, a cricket. see the moonlight. feel the wind. smell the river flowing. night time nature is perfection and you should experience it this summer.

i like to get lost. it forces me to remember that i don’t need a gps to go 5 blocks to that one restaurant. i bike till i feel ”lost” and then bike a little bit more and take a different direction home. i find new parks, new hobby shops, that one weird art installation, graffiti i haven’t seen before, and cool plants everywhere. it reminds me i need to just chill out at take in my surroundings more. disclaimer: i usually do this when i cant sleep and i have a lot of worry in my brain. it helps me leave my phone, distress and connect with my body/space more.
