I am a high school Spanish teacher in Oklahoma and kids here have shocked me with the ways they try to use AI for assignments I give them. In several cases I have caught them because they can’t read what they submit to me and so don’t know to delete the sentence that says something to the effect of ā€œThis summary meets the requirements of the prompt, I hope it is helpful to you!ā€Ā  Teachers give insight on what’s it been like to work with students who insist on using AI for their work.

I don’t hate it. It helps me. I am actually thankful for it. I have seen a lot of ā€˜what’s hot’ posts here bashing on ChatGPT. But here’s my experience. I have dyslexia, which is why a lot of my posts have gramma issues/spelling mistakes (and why I edit my posts so much). I can’t pick them alone. ChatGPT corrects that for me. I like to write stories, it is a big hobby of mine. And I need to write professional emails for work. It helps me where I cannot help myself. I need to write a resume but I can’t read/process the job description/requirements properly? I copy and paste the information into ChatGPT and ask it to highlight what is important. Work requires me to read lengthy documents? I can read until I get stuck and AI will help me. I need to do research for university? I can’t digest all the information and pages that load on my topic of interest, so I will ask ChatGPT to recommend me specific articles to read based on what I need. Of course I try and do as much as I can independently, but extra help that’s free never hurts. A lot of people are hating on AI, but it helps people, despite the greater population abusing it.

this is a pretty common one, but in my grad program there were people using AI to write papers/homework assignments/projects and then patting themselves on the back like they found some kind of life hack. they all graduated and have decent jobs but man was that a bleak omen of what education is becoming.

Explains every thing in detail. Never gets annoyed when asked a stupid question. Never makes you feel like a piece of shit. Too many of us are using it to do our work which is alright but chat gpt's true strength lies in its ability to teach. AI is a tool and it allows us to overcome the human limits. Learn from it instead of making it do your entire work. I'm even learning French from it. If Duolingo is using AI, I might as well learn it from an AI.
