I wasn’t so sure about the red but my roommate said I looked straight out of a Drake‘s look book (the menswear brand, not the rapper) which was very validating. Also not pictured is a pair of Ollie Quinn sunglasses I got for $3 which retail for $185.

I try to wear almost only all black (or dark gray), no shorts and no logos – mostly for aesthetic simplicity, though shout out to Naomi Klein and reading Adbusters at suburban Barnes & Nobles – but I'm softening. My friend Bryan, in a nod to his British and Mexican heritage, started rocking old school semi-shiny black Umbro shorts a few years ago and pointed out that they're cheap on Amazon (sorry Naomi Klein). I only have one pair but they're extremely durable and I wore them all summer: around the house, at the beach, to play softball, to go out. People love to remember Umbros. My other major go-to exception is keeping a small pile of Polo chino hats in various colors as a nod to Young Dro (Atlanta's Cam'ron) and because the various little bears on the hats are all wearing Polo themselves, on some mise en abyme-ish shit.

It’s been 8 months since my last smoke, the longest I’ve gone in 12 years.  Some unconventional tips: - being delusional is effective. I tell myself cigarettes are bad luck. If I smoke one, something bad will happen. - My relationship to cigarettes was spiritual, every single one was a little prayer. To fill the gap, I leaned into woo: candles, tarot, talking to god. - Cigs were my edge, but they numbed me. To keep that rebellion alive, I leaned into things that scared me: fashion choices, challenging long held values, leaning into my queerness, wasting time.  - Somatic release. Shake your leg, wring your hands, go to the gym. Also, going to the gym gets a lot easier when you make the conscious choice to not hate on the bros or influencers.. everyone’s trying to find their place. Love > Snark - It only gets easier if you know exactly WHY you want to smoke in the first place, and address the root causes with mindset or lifestyle changes. Quitting cold turkey without change is not enough. Tag: nicotine quit smoking

It will start tedious. But if you acknowledge what you’re doing — extracting the beauty and essence and freshness from an expertly cultivated herb that was bred hundreds of years ago, it’s the closest you’ll ever get to feeling like a sage prepping ingredients for a healing potion.

If you’re craving a bit more sauce in your life, I implore you to exit the figurative bubble that is noise cancelling headphones, and allow your environment to soundtrack your inner monologue — you’d be surprised how it affects the themes and tone of your inner world. Some brief background on this theory... In my experience, my music selection would often colour my thoughts, and unfortunately I have a penchant for sad boy shit. And sad boy music = sad boy. Conversely, if I made the deliberate choice to listen to “happy” music when I was feeling off, my mind would try to manufacture happiness through sheer will, exposure, and a repeated “happy thoughts” mantra. But this process rarely felt authentic, and all the more isolating.  Instead, I found that inviting the randomness of worldly sounds would take me on a crazy-eyed, spontaneous journey — internally and externally.
