I’ve only ever visited NY never lived there, but watching this countless times in my adolescence plus being a fan of The Strokes, Vampire Weekend, and bands alike has turned me into a big NY GLAZER. What can I say; I love y‘all city!!

I was listening to this song the first time I visited New York City. My roommate and I had met some people online - a gay couple about 20 years our senior - and asked if we could stay with them for a week. They accepted and they gave us a key while they were spending a few days in Fire Island. So much trust between strangers. We just came and went as we pleased from their Astoria home.
While we were there, we met up with a friend of ours, Karen, who was working at Vimeo for the summer at an apartment with a bunch of Vimeo staff. Karen and I held hands under a blanket while we all watched Rushmore. Karen introduced me to some great bands, most notably The Microphones. I had a crush on Karen and Karen loved dinosaurs.
While we were in NYC, we also bought dinner for Riese and Alex of Autostraddle. My roommate had wanted to interview them for an (unrealized) project. I held the camera while my roommate asked them questions. They were shrouded in darkness the entire interview, but I was too anxious to say anything.
I have so many stories of that single trip to NYC — some good, some bad, all memorable.

I listened to Current Joys' album "Wild Heart" a few months ago, but I didn't register or dissect many of the songs since I was focusing schoolwork. Recently, while listening to my Liked Songs on shuffle, "New York City" came on, and I was all over it. Perhaps I'm just biased, having plans to take a trip to New York this June, but this song hits in all the right places for a summer vacation-vibe. Current Joys' consistent nostalgic feel is naturally present in this song, like many of their others, though it's a much more upbeat track than what one would expect from them. For a Texas boy like me, "New York City" encapsulates everything I'm looking forward to in a trip to the big city; fear, memories, opportunities, and pure excitement.

This is more of a take than a rec but if an artist or band is touring a record they recently dropped, they should play the entire album live! It makes for such a great concert experience. I have two examples.
First, I saw Mk.gee in September last year. I’m pretty sure he played every song from Two Star & the Dream Police. He changed up the setlist from the album tracklist plus performed a couple older songs to fill out his stage time but it was all thematically consistent.
My other example is Black Country, New Road. I just saw them in May and I’m almost certain they just performed Forever Howlong front to back, with the addition of one track from Live at Bush Hall. Now this might be an exception because with Isaac (the previous frontman)’s departure, obviously the band can’t really play tracks from their first two records. Still, it doesn’t take away the fact that with their new setup, they had a phenomenal show.
Playing the whole album is also greatly rewarding for the artist’s core fanbase; the ones who memorize lyrics, run streams up, buy merch, and return for future shows.
I think it’s beneficial for the artists too as it creates a symbiosis between recording and touring. It forces them to think more critically about concept and vision and in return, come out with a record that’s cohesive as it is appealing. That way, each tour will be its own unique snapshot in time instead of being another go around where they play their hits from different eras.
