this movie is arguably terrible and the plot kind of falls apart about halfway through, but what always stuck with me is christian bale's performance- this is a movie basically any actor would give 0 fucks about, but mr. bale spent a considerable amount of time studying for his role and it makes the movie watchable. it's hard to put into words why this movie has become one of my favorites, and i'm not sure even i fully understand, but it's been in constant rotation since i caught it on a random movie channel a few years ago.

I am very struck by this film. I think the performances are stellar. Unflinching, mean, and cruel at times. Also, messy and cliche, but I love it. There is something to be said about this poster, too. I totally see why others might not feel the same, though. Definitely of its time. Even so, wow. This is my Mike Nichols' pick, tbh.

After Donnie Darko, Richard Kelly was given 20 million to make "Southland Tales". A film that got booed out of Cannes film festival, grossed only 300,000 worldwide box office, and practically killed the man's film career (before the very recent news of his return). After finally getting around to watching it, I simply cannot understand how anyone didn't enjoy the hell out of this movie. It has aged beautifully, the cast is fucking loaded and all over the place (The Rock, Stifler, Wallace Shawn, Justin Timberlake, Amy Poehler + many more), and in a very silly/fun way satirizes post 9/11 hysteria and political dispersion/stupidity in america without being very preachy. Yes it's sporadic, but there's so many quotables and memorable scenes that are hilarious and just batshit fucking insane Hollywood truly needs to return to giving money to psychos and letting them run wild with their vision. it creates a truly unique film experience such as this one that I could not recommend more.

For all the movie buffs, I know what you’re probably thinking, and I thought the same thing. I Almost didn’t watch this because it kinda seemed to just fall into that dreaded meh “mid” category - solid cast, interesting enough premise, but not very artistic, not a wild story, nothing too deep to say: just a normal movie. In the end, I decided to throw it on, and I’m definitely glad I ended up watching. This ultimate normal movie is about some people over their heads in a not-too-spectacular crime, and that’s exactly what I loved about it, it was just refreshing. That being said - it doesn’t lack in tension, i found myself on the edge of my seat throughout. Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney bring their A games here, and deliver something really worth your time.
