This strange little musical that seems religious but is nothing like it. Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat holds such a space in my heart. I used to perform it in my grandparents living room religiously as a 5 year old. I could say every word and sing every song. I cannot bare to take it out my letterbox top 4.

I watched this technicoloured masterpiece as of late and was reminded of the incredible raw connection humans have with simplicity. The lyrics are nothing complicated or logical but rather convey a sense of familiarity even when backed by an orchestra. Barbara Streisand is what really transformed the tunes, injecting them with the emotive power they used against me. Her intonation not only narratively reflects her quirky character but also illustrates her words, blurring the lines between song and singer and creating imagery rather than noise.

I used to exclusively listen to musical theatre soundtracks & theatrical song cycle recordings. I barely listened to Anything Else.
With that said I started to resent the version of me who liked that stuff. I thought it was uncool.
Recently I’ve found that I can indulge in what once meant a lot to me regardless of whether it’s seen as embarrassing. While my interests have shifted a lot over the years, the person who loved that stuff is still with me. And that can be really fun to look back on.
