The costuming??? Jonathan Groff (aka King George) in red, and everyone else in black??? The very deliberate song choices???? Daveed Diggs wearing a black beret and a glove on his right hand as a reference to The Black Panthers??? That entire performance was a subtle form of political protest and a beautiful one at that (I cried watching it lol)
it (kinda) pains me to say that Lin-Manuel Miranda actually did real good on this. But maybe Andrew Garfield is just that good.
(I linked the clip of “Sunday” because it is Sunday, and i think i cried when i first watched it)
a very potter musical: despite starting theatre in 3rd grade i wasn't actually invested in theatre culture until I saw Hamilton, but this stupid parody satire musical defied all that and became one of my fav shows ever and it is still up there, if anything for nostalgia.
hamilton (duh): I was obsessed in 6th grade and it truly kicked off my love of musicals and inspired me to listen and get into more shows.
falsettos: I love the themes of found family in this as well as how eccentric and quirky the characters and music is. the revival is especially fun to analyze in terms of the production sets and such!!!!
hadestown: my big flex is that i got into this before it was on Broadway and bc of that I do think the off Broadway recording is lowkey better with a better orpheus but I digress, no matter what form/version you listen to it is a beautiful and powerful adaptation of the classic myth!
the guy who didn't like musicals: another starkid musical which got me back into my love of theatre, despite me no longer actually doing theatre.
also honorable mentions for banger soundtracks: frankenstein, in the heights, jekell and hyde, bare a pop opera (PUHLEASE WATCH THE SLIME TUTORIAL WITH JONAH PLATT ON YT IT SLAPS I PROMMY), Mozart das musical (it's German and I only listen to two songs from it but those two songs are bangers even tho I have no clue what's happening), epic concept musical (jorge rivera-herrans my king), and paris the musical (it is so 80s and tacky but is hiding a few bangers)
I recently rewatched Glee and fell back into a Darren Criss rabbit hole. He’s got this exceptional new rom-com musical that he produces and stars in, for which he originated the male lead. Simply put, I loved it. But please, please take me seriously when I say: personally, this broke me a thousand times harder than La La Land. I don’t want to talk about it too much, because it’s something that’s better to come into blindly, but I’m tellin’ ya. There is a reason this won 6 out of 10 Tony nominations. There hasn’t been an original musical that has moved me this much since probably Hamilton. And that was a decade ago! For people who are part of the outcry for original material on Broadway, This. Is. It.
There's been a handful of zine-making events in my area and it's helped me 1) explore my art styles & other mediums of creativity, and 2) meet some really cool zine authors!! Highly recommend <3
My steps:
1. Shut my phone down, hide it in my room, and lock the door so it's a pain in the ass to get to.
2. Be bored, and sit in the boredom for like 7-10 minutes (MINIMUM)-- once you're bored see what your brain gravitates to beyond The Screen (is it doodling? is it playing guitar? is it writing?)
3. Find the little thing your brain latches on to, and start doing it! Even if it's something goofy like "Just Dance youtube videos" to dance to LOL this is you, deliberately following your brain's natural curiosity & interest And then rinse and repeat however you like <3 Once you get accustomed to the smaller, more gratifying feel good activities, social media starts to feel too overwhelming to even pick back up again-- you'll be reaching for it less and less
(a final aside: I am of the major belief that creativity & imagination is critical to creating a better reality to live in, because it shows that you're capable of leaning into what "doesn't exist", and are courageous enough to imagine and build a reality that defies the status quo. but that's just me LOL)
