I think people should wear flip flops this summer but not because they’ve be deemed trendy by GQ, instead because they’re useful and mindless and wildly accepted by everyone to be an appropriate summer off. I’m welcoming this trend with wide open arms this summer - fisherman sandals. Whether it’s the beauties from The Row, a nice pair of Paraboot Pacifics, or something else. They’re a classic and timeless shoe that isn’t seen all over the place – yet.

I got to write about this a few weeks back (linked above for your convenience) but 2024 is the year of the clog. In some senses, there’s a chefcore style that’s becoming more prominent partly due to The Bear & Jeremy Allen White. But I also think post Covid people have become more outdoorsy; we’ve seen so many brands come up that are making trail sneakers and sandals. The casual transition out of that is gardening clogs.
I own two pairs, these Seavees & the ALD ones, both are great “I’m running out the door and need something quick“ options. The rubber makes them easily wearable in the rain and easily cleanable through gunk & mud. I think paired with looser pants and nice socks you have a recipe to look…and I hate to say it…TRENDY. Go buy a pair. Or two. Or six.

Flip-flops are the superior footwear. My soul slowly necrotizes anytime I have to put on socks and closed-toe shoes. Unfortunately, I developed Plantar fasciitis this year and my podiatrist said I needed to lose my preferred flops—Chang Dao natural rubber flip-flops. I started looking through the usual suspects of recovery sandals from athletic shoe companies. Hideous. And too many slides and not enough thongs. I hate slides. But I did break down and buy some foam Birk slides as house slippers. They are very comfortable. I would not be caught dead outside with them. A month later, I was delighted to discover that Birkenstock released honest to goodness flip-flops. My feelings quickly soured once I saw them. Also hideous. I don't know why I expected different. There hasn't been a visually acceptable Birk to date. I turned to my last resort: Reddit. And was directed to an uninspiringly named brand called Archies. Their flops weren't an assault on the eyes so I ordered a pair keeping my expectations low. After a month with them, they're winners. Archies aren't playing around. It's like they just glued a thong on an orthopedic insert. They're light, stick to your feet like glue, and look fucking normal. They've been a god-send after running my half marathon. Recommended.

I feel like there’s a special connectivity on this app that I haven’t felt in a long time, maybe since early 2010’s tumblr. The fact that you can’t promote yourself like IG is wonderful. The fact that there isn’t mass video content like Tik Tok is great. It’s not this monetized / paid sponsorship app. People are here because they want to be a part of something with nothing to gain besides friendship. Seeing the URL -> IRL meetups warms my heart so much (waiting for an NYC or Brooklyn meetup).
Thanks for your participation on this niche little app. I smile reading all the recs and all the comments and all the asks. Hope we’ll all be here for a long time.

In all seriousness — weird that an app I downloaded in April would make genuinely want to drive back into Brooklyn during end of day traffic for a happy hour. Great app filled with great people.

I think a life rule for me is to surround myself with people who know more / are smarter / are cooler than me and just absorb their aura by listening / observing them. It’s made me the incredibly smart / cool person you all know and love.
I just never thought I’d feel the same way about URL friends. I’m constantly listening to the songs I see posted here, reading the articles, subbing to newsletters, and googling topics that get tossed onto the feed.
It’s nice to know you can become a more rounded person by just absorbing what your mutuals post on here. I’m going to sit on my couch, have a cocktail and digest my lovely feed. Happy Sunday!
