i was gonna say kindle for the phone, but I’m on here to not be on instagram. I guess you gotta find the most helpful/fun distraction sometimes

I’ve been struggling with phone addiction recently (ironic, but I feel like this is more like journaling, like a gratitude journal in a way, anyways), so much so, that I downloaded a damn app to block instagram, because the default apple screen time blockers are too easy to bypass. And still I find myself picking up my phone. Ideally, I would like to stop this habit, which will take some work. So for now, I have been aiding myself by redirecting the habit. I pick up my phone and instead, and I read a little.
I was really against ebooks before, but I just had to give them a good old try. And I really enjoy it now! It is specially great that I can get these books for free from my library!
Seriously, give it a try. A good way to start reading again. Reading is good for you 😉

being sincere with the title, scrolling is addicting by design. its hard to do this on your own. in addition to using tools (see recs below) i recommend changing your mindset when you scroll on ig to i’m wasting my own time. like this isn’t beneficial to you, it’s just making some horrible person richer. i am so sincerely sorry to people who have to use ig or tiktok for biz.
start thinking about your day in like 1-2 hour chunks — what can i get started in here? (plug for the rec to replace scrolling with hobbies) And try to put your phone the fuck away somewhere! (listen to music on your computer or something). and then when you’re doing hobbies/activities and you need to take a break — find something you can like “fidget” with during those breaks. not necessarily a fidget toy but like *make* yourself some food, flip through a magazine, just like try to be analog. we must save ourselves from technofuedalism 😩
i have screen zen because it’s free, it keeps me off ig. i highly recommend. i’ll cheat sometimes and go to the web page instagram.com but the functionality is sooo bad that i’m not on there for long.
there’s also a device called brick that will lock you out of apps unless you tap your phone to it, super helpful!! but you have to pay for it. screenzen is free :)

it’s designed to be additive so don’t blame yourself, it doesn’t help.
deleting instagram helped me. sometimes i go on the browser but it’s a less pleasant experience so less addictive. i redownload when i want to post and then delete again. annoying but worth it.
my phone is getting old so my battery is going bad. this helps because i’m more inclined to only use my phone when i need it to keep it from dying. resist taking a charger every where you go if your phone is the same.
been following this writer/artist/screen time activist (?) and she has some cool thoughts on the matter: https://augustlamm.substack.com/p/you-dont-need-a-smartphone

The excitement when you got the chance to DJ and the feeling of absolute dejection when people didn't like what you played. Shut down because of copyright — whoops! — but I think there’s a reboot that recently came out recently, don’t know if holds up
