I have my own business and instead of waiting for clients to come to me, I've started going to them. Private story-filled letters in their emails. Pitches to the digital magazines they read. Potential collaborations with the podcasts they listen to, etc. I'm done waiting for things to happen to me and am now finding ways to bring myself to the tables I want a seat at!

I got my job by like idk sending out I think 500+ applications but also in the end I messaged every single person I could think of who might know someone or know someone who knows someone to just even get a tiny toe in the door and I think that helped Like literally I had a friend who I thought knew someone who used to be at x magazine. I texted the friend and asked about it and if it seem d okay I’d ask them to put me in touch or some shit Before that I got my job literally on Craigslist it seemed weird but I was sooooo desperate for a job and it ended up being legit tech job w health benefits and good pay So 🤷‍♀️

Been doing a bunch of these as part of my career rebrand (Sandy 2.0) and it’s been really fun! I get to chat with people who have jobs I’m curious about, learn about their paths, how they spend their time, and what challenges they face. Truly wish I’d done this before committing to working in the arts for fourteen years—ya live, ya learn. Hoping one of these connections might lead to another, but for now, it’s been fun to ride the curiosity wave and activate my listening muscles. 10/10 would recommend. On the flip, if anyone is curious about working in the arts / museums / curating, I’d be happy to share what I know! Comment or DM me, I’d love to pay it forward.

it’s not delusional or ego inflating, it’s not creepy or stalkerish, but I’m a good internet sleuth and try to search for the company name + “recruiter” or “talent” and show genuine interest + how I am relevant to them, it’s how I got my last gig

Very confused, but in the best way ever. Think this might become a new addiction. Any recs on how to navigate / where to start?!
