julia phillips was a film producer during the 70s and 80s. during her relatively short-lived career, she didn’t work on much but everything she touched, such as taxi driver, close encounters of the third kind and steelyard blues, are now considered cult classics. sure, this is almost a 700-page memoir but it’s a breezy 700 pages that detail the trials and tribulations of being a woman in a male dominated industry, as well as motherhood and drug addiction. plus there’s some great gossip in this book…..

excited to finish this one lol but a journalist’s long-form account of the making of a John Huston movie. Interesting to see the technical side of film making (as someone who studied it but never knew the process) and also …..kinda classic silly goofy 1950s Hollywood antics, in an industry that takes itself very seriously but is entirely make believe
