Hailey is the Anthony Bourdain of fashion documentaries! This is an extremely underrated, beautiful show that explores the political side of fashion. And whether it's Putin-based streetwear in Russia or transgender models in Thailand or sapeurs (Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People) in the Congo, Hailey treats it with a sense of curiosity, respect, and fun. My favorite episode is Palestine.
Last week I watched Catwalk (1995), a fashion documentary following Christy Turlington around fashion week and WOW. Catwalk is a must watch for lovers of 90s fashion and was an immediate 5/5 on letterboxd for me, personally :)) It was so interesting to see the hectic theatrics that take place behind the scenes of fashion shows and the processes of iconic designers during fittings and backstage - particularly John Galliano, of course. This documentary is bursting at the seams with iconic names, faces and walks! Give it a watch :))
Sesame Street is a brilliant show. We tend to glorify sloppy violence and ultra-dark themes but those are more than easy, in fact, they are often gratuitous and masturbatory! It takes much more intention to make something so beautiful, creative, and playful. Play is one of the highest forms of present-ness with another person. Compliments, cheerleading, pep talks all have a short lifespan. They're impersonal and don't actually require much effort. Play is a beautiful way to communicate to someone else that they are worthy of your sustained attentions, time, and imagination, and the fact that Sesame Street managed to do that for thousands of kids is nothing short of true genius.
From Haymarket Books: "Now as ever, we recognize the root cause and ongoing perpetrator of violence in Palestine to be Israeli settler-colonialism and apartheid, and we stand in solidarity with Palestinians in their struggle for freedom."
The iPod Shuffle is a design miracle. Five buttons, no screen, your favorite 200 songs on random mode. The process of loading songs feels archaic and clunky today compared to the seamlessness of streaming, but it's worth it to use this adorable little device.
