This came on while I was on the subway. The repetitive tones washed over me like waves and I found myself staring. I took in the space around me completely but also started to go deeper inward. A common thing people say about New York is that it can be a very lonely city. You’re surrounded by people and yet sometimes you feel so invisible. I enjoy my solitude, but this track—10 minutes long, ambient and totally unexpected—made me sit with that feeling and examine it without judgement. The very act of listening to such a unique and profound piece of music on headphones is lonely. By definition. It reminded me that music is not just a thing to enjoy but something that can move you and guide you deeper. You probably have to be in the mood. It came on for me at the right time.
