I’ve thought about committing to going by my middle name when moving to a new place because of how much my identity is tied to my name. I never do though, because I can be whoever I want despite my subconscious connection and response to my own name. I think it can be an active thing you shift in your mind- to rebrand yourself while keeping the name. Changing it for good might just fast track that rebrand.

I see your point, but if my whole life my family called me by my first name, and then as I got older I decided to go by my middle one everywhere, then that main name feels more special, yk? You'd have to really know me to call me that. I think there's a beauty in that too.

I could probably change my name but I wouldn't really want to? Plus after more than 20 years responding to the same name it would be a struggle to see myself as a different name. Regardless, I'm a major fan of do what you want. And if you're attached to your name and don't want to change it then who cares whether most people agree or disagree. It's your name. It would be inauthentic for you to do anything else with it.

I've gone by so many nicknames that everybody thinks it odd to call me by my real name at all (some people even get it wrong), so I've accepted having different names from different people. I've always liked my name, especially since my mom put so much thought into it (even the fact it would make a good nick name), but unfortunately I feel like it no longer represents me. I've sorta outgrown it, so Im sorta looking for a new name. Either way the name that matters is the one you feel most aligned with.

i moved across the country right before senior year of highschool. decided to go by a different name. best choice i’ve ever made. it’s been about 6 years and im looking into legally changing it obviously it doesn’t have to be that big of a reinvention. something i wished i had done that i didnt is be true to my interests. no matter what you’re secretly interested in (nothing genuinely creepy or illegal), there will be other people interested in it too. no point in suppressing something that brings you joy. especially when there WILL be people who support and encourage you

Finally lighting the candle you’ve held onto because it smelled so good that you wanted to keep it forever but then lost it; reunited a few years later. Just to light it in your new apartment.
