i could write for years about this album being the peak of sophistipop greatness. but i’ll leave you with just two things. one: this man recruited RYUICHI SAKAMOTO to produce this and produce this he fuckin did. two: roddy frame had this to say about the process aside from Sakamoto being a genius: “Frame says his days there rapidly fell into a pattern. Into the studio in the early afternoon; out again at around 2am; straight across to a deli off Time Square for a turkey sandwich ('because it was possible to get one at two in the morning, and for no other reason'); a cab-ride back to the Mayflower; an hour or so listening to Shabba Ranks on a ghetto-blaster; bed.” LISTEN NOW.

try out maxwell’s 1998 sophomore album “embrya”. my personal favorite track is “luxury: cococure”. delicious basslines, smooth + warm vocals and funky, dynamic percussion. very enigmatic and sounds just like the album cover looks. not on this album, but i also highly suggest his beautiful cover of kate bush’s “this woman’s work”. he makes the song very much his own, while still being loyal to the original. his experimentation, creativity and wide array of inspirations make it obvious as to why he’s seen as a pioneer of the genre.

as many very wise people have said comparison is the thief of fucking joy. I mean you hear these things time and time again but the validity of the statement never really reigns true until you are on the other side of it; in the muck, reflecting on all the ways in which you are not where you are "supposed" to be or meandering over the experiences everyone else around you has had. I won't lie to you and say that I fully believe that the derailments we face or the adversities one might endure are necessarily all products of "higher" teachings BUT I do believe that we rob ourselves of so much dignity when we use these hardships as anchors to what the rest of the world is pushing upon you. it is okay to take your time. it is okay to fail and not know how to pick back up the pieces. society SHOULD encourage everyone to move in accordance to their own natural rhythm and not make people conform into these perceived notions of growth. move at your own pace. we are all flailing around trying to figure this shit out. seek fulfillment as you chose. be gentler with yourself. being alive is already hard enough, and you've made it this far... and that pretty fucking incredible to me!
