This is one of those albums I listen to based off the cover. During a trip to Tennessee, I found a little record store in a Gatlinburg Mall. The small area was no where near accommodating to the surplus of people browsing the music. I found my own cove looking through the wall containing hundreds of thousands of CDs, (my personal favorite media for music) and this one stuck out immediately. I took a listen during the ride home and I was completely taken back. One of my favorite albums Iāve listened to this year, and for sure one of my favorites through it all.
My Highlights:
- āStarsā
- āIād Like Your Hair Longā
- āSongs Of Farewell And Departureā
All killer no filler. Quintessential 90ās stoner rock/shoe-gaze.
All songs are epic, melancholic rippers that leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside, with a single acoustic track that serves as a sentimental intermission from the heartfelt head-banging.
My favorites off the album are āWhy I Like The Robinsā and āStarsā
I know this album cover is imprinted into the corneas of many already. but Iām listening to this ~8 yrs after I first found it, which sort of marked the start of my own self-discovery w music (along with, who else, but velvet underground). and since they are both so huge, Iāve had a hard time listening to them as earnestly in years since. of course relationships with music change, but I think I became embarrassed by the earnestness of this album & its internet overexposure. but it is sincere and beautiful (+ a little freaky and smutty) and it is very special to come back to every now and then. it turns on a certain part of my soul I canāt usually access when I come to it at the right moment. full of love and oneness w humanity, time transcendent
ālet us lay in the sun and count every beautiful thing we can seeā
A friend showed me this album 10 years ago and I don't think Iāve had a bout of depression since that I haven't walked around and listened to it in its entirety. But it kind of morphs depending on your mood. It also is a beautiful album for a summer drive. This is like mazzy star bossa nova. For years I thought it was considered a classic orchestral pop album on par with Pet Sounds or What's Going On or any other late 60s album with an emphasis on arrangement, but there's not much info about it online. On Reddit itās just a couple people talking about how they like the album cover but donāt care for the album. Anyways, I definitely will be adding a few of these songs to my funeral playlist. But donāt wait until Iām dead.
(As long as you donāt go to school, concerts, shopping, errands, outside, or really anywhere tbh.)
Being for real, we offer a lot of different kinds of nature and places, and if you want to visit one, you can literally just drive there.
