Filmmuseum Vienna

My favorite spot to go catch a movie, they have retrospectives of the best directors and have an overall wonderfully curated selection of films. It’s run as a film archive as a non-profit, and consists of one very minimal screening room and a small cafe adjacent to it. Just hearing the way my shoes click on the white marble floor will already make me giddy — I’m so glad it reopened. Just before the pandemic caught one of my all time favorite movies, Fellini’s Juliet of the Spirits there, on original restored film.

Grab a couple friends, watch (once per week, together or separately) classics/canonicals you otherwise would never have gotten around to, discuss irl or on Zoom. Feel free to hate, but also feel free to love There is literally no other way to get yourself to watch Jeanne Dielman, but boy-oh-boy you’ll be happy you did

or maybe Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. I saw hella movies in theaters last year on the AMC stubs membership but it was CGI monkeys carrying heavy emotions ftw

GOING IN BLIND

My god everything is experienced better this way. Stop looking at guides, walkthroughs, endings explained (my least favorite), even the blurbs on the back. Such a rare opportunity in this time to go into something without knowing anything about it, yet so rewarding. To be pleasantly surprised or blown away, to have no idea what’s happening, to find that you really didn’t like it, an opinion formed on your own.. nothing is more valuable
