I read this on the beach last weekend (an unhinged choice) but I just couldn’t put it down. Fantasy without a whiff of Tolkien.

Robert Eggers needs to snap up the rights to this one. Pure fantasy escapism with a mature philosophical bent. I devoured it in less than a week and have been dreaming of the labyrinth ever since.

I haven’t been so into two books at once for different reasons like this before; it feels impossible to put down either.
Jane Eyre for lock-in moments where I can annotate and google new words. The Hobbit for a more leisurely read.
I ❤️ books (also my boyfriend lent me this copy of the hobbit. He collects books with cool covers. I have never really experienced the joys of J.R.R. Tolkien until now!)

This was not a “I can’t put it down” kind of situation but it was a really rewarding read and it solidified my interest in speculative fiction and was among the books that made me a more ambitious reader.
If you liked The Word for World Is Forest (another highlight from my year, frankly) you will probably like this.
