there has been a 90s-level amount of lightning bugs this summer, a sort of lightning bug renaissance. went to the woods last night and felt so lucky to see such an abundant spectacle.
I just did a cursory look at why there are more lightning bugs, and it appears that soil moisture has something to do with it? (at least in Indiana) https://www.wrtv.com/weather/noticing-more-fireflies-this-summer-this-could-be-why
We used to catch them at daycare and on my 6th birthday I caught 6 and felt like it was my first sign from the universe.
But really I tapped in to say although I love bugs last year I encountered the Spruce Beetle (pictured) and also the deepest fear. Beware their awful antennae.
