my brother and i were ranting yesterday about how it looks like every season, half of the new anime coming out is some sort of isekai (when a person is reborn in another world, usually fantasy driven) and how we’re both tired of the same thing. we picked up on sword art online back in the day and it feels like since that story everyone wants to replicate it in a fashion. but then i thought to myself, why is it such a popular genre?
my first though was, maybe a lack of fantasy stories in japan in general, outside of western IPs like disney and harry potter, and then more eastern specific stories that pull for shinto stories.
then the next thing i thought was, maybe the people watching it really need an escape that was very different to what life is right now. outside of the cliche storylines and scenery, the thing i don’t like about them is that they’re too unrealistic, and that the concept of being reborn to do better just feels like a cop out to me. most of the time it’s someone considered a loser who gets to live a grander life, and while that is something a lot of people can relate to, i also think that you can try your best in the real world to do that on your own (not mentioning cultural and systemic barriers).
escapism is a very common thing to do, and im not hating on people who like isekais. at this point im mad at an industry looking towards all these stories to create when there are other stories out there that are good but don’t portray themselves in a eurocentric high fantasy world.

I *love* Lodoss and .hack and Rezero and stuff. Love ”western isekai” like Narnia, Alice in wonderland-esque stories, maybe the Golden Compass counts too?? These self insert seasonal power fantasy shows are so depressing and are an unfortunate consequence of the increasing commercialization of the industry. They’re generic and easily draw in viewers. You have to consider the fact that every one of these seasonal may be a person’s first anime (tragedy). To react like “woahh this is awesome” and then be greeted with tons of similar series is a marketer’s wet dream I think. What I love so much about the fantasy and sci fi genres is the scope and grandeur of it all. Living, breathing worlds in which the author has created of every detail not even out of necessity but out of love for the art. There is no need to develop anything with these seasonal type shows. Brown hair plain faced mc and a generic (pink, red, blonde haired) sex object to be obsessed with them. Throw him at some generic orcs and goblins and then the big bad at the end of the cour. Maybe the mc is a spider or a slime or a vending machine or a child, doesn’t matter when the formula is the same every time anyways. It’s why I always find myself working backwards when looking for stuff to watch or read.

There’s something about Japanese fiction sometimes that just hits different.
But i really liked this one because it felt like many of the characters were just outcasts and every normal person in the story was the enemy, and sometimes that’s how i live my life 😂

my taste in anime and manga is a bit all over the place, but if we’re like-minded, then you might just absolutely love these <3
this isn’t in any particular order
01. wonder egg priority — last three eps or so are rushed and the ending is kinda wonky but overall a good take of the magical girl genre
02. the ice guy and his cool female colleague — just a chill romance with some supernatural sprinkled in
03. bibliomania — obscure asf with no official english translation and the original japanese release was limited I believe
04. frieren: beyond journey’s end — favourite anime alongside flip flappers. a slice of life fantasy
05. apothecary diaries — fun mystery set in a fictional country inspired by imperial china
06. the summer hikaru died — a promising horror with implied queer characters. take what I said with a grain of salt since it’s been a while since I read it
07. kaguya-sama: love is war — hilarious romcom about rich high schoolers minus the protagonist
08. chainsaw man — a fever dream ngl, but a good one
09. uzumaki — classic horror. has some romance elements tbh
10. haikyuu —my original favourite sports anime ^^ it holds a special place in my heart
11. blue lock + episode nagi — my absolute fave sports manga rn even though I can’t take it seriously at times. kaiser’s my favourite red flag
12. girls’ last tour — end of the world slice of life. bittersweet
13. violet evergarden — fyi the relationship is weird, but I just choose to ignore it. aside from that, everything else is beautiful though)
14. flip flappers — so very underrated! the fandom is pretty much nonexistent. sci-fi magical girls)
15. good night punpun — definitely not for the faint of heart. depression incarnate and has many mature themes and triggering topics

So the difference between yuri on ice and attack on titan is pretty vast, so I'll give some reqs and also why I'm req'ing them:
Mob Psycho 100 [genre: weird]: don't get put off by the artstyle, the animation is fantastic and the characters are very very likeable. Go in blind! You won't regret it. Has little to no fanservice.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann [genre: mecha]: Ever wondered what was up with big robots? This anime has big robots. They get so big you won't even believe it. The animation is incredibly..bouncy. Fanservice/unnecessary nudity-level medium.
Kill La Kill [genre: magical girl? nudity?]: if you liked Gurren Lagann but wants more magical girls and less clothes. This one is incredibly weird in ways only anime can be. Fanservice-level extremely high but it makes a weird amount of sense within the story, I just...yeah. I have warned you.
One Punch Man [genre: superhero/shonen]: The first season is a very funny take on the superhero genre and supremely entertaining. I skipped the following seasons, you do what you want! :D Fanservice low!
The Apothecary Diaries [genre: mystery/romance]: A mystery / romance set in the court of the chinese emperor's concubines. Honestly it's mostly a medical mystery show and I thought it was very well crafted! The main character is excellent.
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood [genre: adventure/shonen]: This is a longer show but it's about two brothers who know alchemy and their..alchemical adventures. It's just really good!

idk how i came across this in my daily wikipedia surfs, but something about this painting just amuses me so much.
my first impression was this looks fairly modern in a way, possibly because of the composition and how she made her features so light and bouncy. it oddly made me think of disney when i looked for longer. then i see it was made in 1909 😂
this painting can transcend times and i wouldn’t truly know when it was made unless i looked more closely at the objects around the subject. but even that can be a stretch as vintage items can be popular amongst anyone and they can just have their vanity setup look like this.
i tried looking for photographs of her online but alas nothing came up with certainty.

i saw something on here a day ago about how fireflies are disappearing and lightly catastrophized the scenario. but then as i regulated myself i looked up an article lightly extinguishing my concerns.
so as i look at the copious little flickers out my window, ill be glad to tell you that while firefly populations are decreasing, some firefly species are adapting to new environments trying to prosper and evolve. big causes for their decline are obvi climate change, urbanization, and light pollution. a simple way for you to not make things bad for the fireflies in your area is to not use pesticides on your lawns if you have them. they spend most of their lives in the ground so it starts at the soil.
additionally, every article i see with the salacious title about “last generation to see fireflies“ seems to be blocking out a lot of things about current firefly populations. most of the fireflies on the IUCN red list they keep mentioning are marked vulnerable or least concern. so there is a possibility a species or more of fireflies may disappear, but all of them i don’t think so.
