I am tired of how draining my 9-5 has been. I want to take back my mornings and center it around enriching activities solely for ME, not how I get ready for a productive day of work. I choose to read a book, magazine article, etc. but lately, I've been having fun watching films. I watched a bit of Yi Yi by Edward Yang one day. Hope to finish it another morning and then watch even more movies before work, instead of waiting for an evening or weekend day to do what I like.

some days u want to go to the gym before work. Some days u dont. On the days you feel like staying in bed, wake up at the same time and throw on a movie. Nothing heavy in the mornings for me, but a nice romcom or something silly sets the day up so well. I feel so excited to wake up if i have something fun to watch - like setting out an outfit the night before but instead im picking a movie

I was doing this for a while every morning but I've been so tired lately that I've been sleeping in and then have to rush to get ready for work...
...reading a book (not on my screen) would be nice to start my morning with, too!

the problem that most people have with balancing their day job and creative work is that they do the day job part first, which means that (1) you’ve already given your most productive hours to The Man and (2) when you get done with 8 hours of bullshit, instead of getting to rest you now have to motivate yourself to do *more work*, which is immensely demotivating.
in contrast, if you wake up early and do your creative work *before* the day job, you’ll have way more energy to give to your projects, and when you get home from The Man you get to rest easy knowing you already put in your hours for the day. even though i work freelance now i still implement this - wake up early, work out, do my writing, and *then* i worry about shit for my clients. i highly recommend it

I have been making more efforts to explore references without meddling of algorithms. Goodbye Pinterest. Goodbye endless "recommended for you" scrolling. I booked an appointment at the archive library of this Japanese streetwear brand called Vowels in NYC. The creative director has over 2000 fashion, culture, photography, and design related magazines and books that spanned over 4 decades. I was able to choose books out of the 200 or so that were out in the store, and they had scanners. I had the time of my life. I felt like a researcher, a real curator. This is small first step in rebuilding my critical eye & references free from digital interference.

I blinked and made a short film? My friend recently started an artist collective, and one of the flagship activities involves hosting parties with queer and femme DJs and/or musical talent. I take the theme and then create something to go alongside the party. This party was called Spring Fling and is about rebirths and awakenings. I reached out to friends to help me create a non-linear short film that tells the "Awakening" stories of 4 women. Pseudo-interview style, and improvised/"real" stories. We posted initial cut, and I couldn't be more thankful for the opportunity to make art with and for my friends!

I love salons. I love intentional spaces for artists, writers, thinkers, clowns, performers yappers, educators, etc. etc. can convene to share ideas, just because.
Recently went to a salon called Salon 4J. Its not exactly a "public" salon, but I love that it has "branding" so to speak. This was an "After Dark" edition, so the topics were pretty spicy. History of "Horny Cinema", dance floor make-outs, yoni massages and a short story involving a queer woman living with the ghost of an actress from an iconic yiddish film were the topics du jour. All hosted in an apartment, very intimate, with artwork done by the host's badass grandma. Cutest snacks. What I love about salons is that they're not exclusive, and anyone can come if you have know someone and have a partiful link. If you host a salon please invite me.
