I recently discovered that this is offered completely FOR FREE by my local library and I’ve been using it basically every day since then!!! It’s not perfect (personally I don’t like the fact that it’s 90% flash cards), but I normally take notes and supplement that with looking up words on WordReference and googling grammar concepts I don’t fully understand. They have a TON of languages available — definitely go check and see if your library offers it or another language learning resource!!

It’s like Duolingo, except it’s free through many libraries and it teaches you real sentences, grammar, and cultural context!

Completely free audio-format lessons that prioritize understanding over thoughtless memorization. It’s just one guy I think, hence the limited language options so far. He’s a great teacher. The languages offered are Spanish, German, Greek, Swahili as complete courses, also intro courses for French, Italian, Turkish, and Arabic. Hope you’re learning one of the ones listed lol

Love this! I agree re: the above recommendation; you should start with Anki and use it to learn the 1000 most frequent words in whatever language you’re learning.
While you’re learning those words, it’s also helpful to start studying some basic grammar. Doesn’t have to be anything too intense. You could buy a grammar book and do one lesson a day, watch grammar lesson videos on YouTube, or use an online program like Kwiziq (depending on what language you want to learn). Once you’re done learning the 1000 vocab words, I’d start consuming media! There are so many resources online depending on what your target language is—podcasts, children’s TV shows, newspapers, novels, etc. You can continue to make Anki vocab cards when you come across a word you don’t know, but it really depends on how you best learn.
I meet with my French tutor once a week and it’s helped me immensely with my speaking skills. You can find online tutors on Italki for pretty reasonable prices.
I also changed my phone and laptop language to French — it was frustrating at first but you get used to it pretty quickly and it helps with the learning process.
There’s also so many language learning resources online like r/languagelearning on Reddit. Good luck!

Sometimes I talk to my family or my coworkers or I hear an influencer online say ā€œI’m just a girl hahahaā€ and I am like oh my godddd how can you still think like ā€œblue means boy pink means girlā€ !!! And this literally affects their view on everything!!! What do you mean you think female dogs are ā€œmore dramaā€ than male dogs!! They’re dogs!!! Get me out of here!!!!

finally using my portable CD player again to listen to my favorite album that isn't on any streaming services anymore!! it's so fun to have physical copies of media I like, and it was great to not use my phone for once (though the CD would pause every time I accidentally bumped into the player while I was walking to class; it was kind of charming but also pretty annoying).
